US wins by 2, 70-68. Everybody played poorly today. Next two should be a breeze, so at this point the US team has basically won the group.

Today's results make things more difficult for the US. Granted, their round of 16 game will likely be against the Germany-Angola winner, but with both Spain and Greece losing to Lithuania and Turkey, respectively, it is becoming likely that Spain v Greece will be a round of 16 game, with the winner to face the US in the quarters.

Team USA cruised to an 88-51 victory over Iran today, and became the first team to secure their exact spot in the knockout round, as they clinched 1st place in Group B. Most of the knockout round spots are getting set today, but not specifically the order of finish:

Group A: Argentina, Serbia, Australia, Angola - Serbia-Argentina winner wins group, Australia-Angola loser finishes 4th (and plays the US in the round of 16)

Group B: 1. USA - The winner of the Brazil-Slovenia game is in the knockout round, likely second.

Group C: Turkey, Greece, Russia - Turkey beat both Greece and Russia, so they win the group unless they lose their last 2. Greece-Russia loser finishes 3rd.

Group D: France, Lithuania, Spain, New Zealand - France-Lithuania winner wins group, Spain will finish 3rd unless they lose to Canada and New Zealand beats France.

As for how this affects the US, they'll play A-4 in the round of 16, which will be the loser of Argentina-Angola (likely Angola). In the quarters, they'll face the winner of C-2 and D-3, which will be Spain (D-3) against likely the Greece-Russia winner.

Just made a $20 bet with a friend that the US team will not win their rest of their games by double digits.

All of them or any of them?

any of them

If any one game is decided by less than 10 points (or US loses), I win $20.

So China advances based on the second tiebreaker, goal average.

Seriously ... goal average?? WTF is that?

Scoring average...it's not that hard to decipher.

EDIT: The second tiebreaker is essentially differential of games between tied teams. That is why China already is advancing regardless of tonight's result.

Actually, Ivory Coast led Puerto Rico by 12 with under 10 seconds left, and PR tossed up a meaningless 3 at the buzzer to lose by 9. However, since China beat Ivory Coast by 10 and Puerto Rico beat China by 8, that meaningless 3 ended up being the tiebreaker difference to knock out the Ivory Coast.

Why does this always happen to China? Remember in 2006 FIBA World Championships, they had a dramatic buzzer beating 3 in the last preliminary game to beat Serbia and advance them to the Knockout stage.

Are you sure?

Without that meaningless 3, it would have looked like this:

China scores 159 points and gives up 157 points. Goal average is 159/157 = 1.0127 ...

Ivory Coast scores 161 points and gives up 159 points. Goal average is 161/159 = 1.0125 ...

China still wins the goal average tiebreaker.

Huge break for the US team, as France lost to New Zealand by enough that Spain passed them both in point differential.

Here is the round of 16:

1A - Serbia v.

4B - Croatia

2D - Spain v.

3C - Greece

1C - Turkey v.

4D - France

2B - Slovenia v.

3A - Australia

1B - USA v.

4A - Angola

2C - Russia v.

3B - New Zealand

1D - Lithuania v.

4C - France

2A - Argentina v.

3B - Brazil

Spain-Greece and Argentina-Brazil should be the highlights of the round of 16.

The funniest result of the afternoon was when France tried to lose to New Zealand to avoid Greece in the round of 16, only to lose by 1 point too much (NZ was fouling at the end up 9 because they needed to win by 12) at the end, and instead of throwing the game by a few to face Russia, they lost by 12 and now will face Turkey in the round of 16.

Also, as a result, Greece, who looked (at least early on) like they were trying to lose to avoid Spain in the round of 16, lost and get to face Spain anyway, trusting that France would have no problem with New Zealand.

Spain is out, losing to Serbia 92-89 in the quarters. Serbia hit a shot nearly from half court with 3 seconds left to win it.

USA won this tourney fairly easily despite sending our "B" team. It's amazing how taking these events seriously allowed us to reclaim our international dominance. The gap is a lot closer than it was in 1992 (a LOT closer), to the point where we could lose any game we play. But we'll be the best team on the court every night for the foreseeable future.
