They just announced on the D-Backs' broadcast that Dan Haren has been traded to the Angels, for Joe Saunders and others.

Dominos starting to fall.

Interesting. Rangers have what? A 6 game lead in the division? Gonna be tough to make up. Wild Card I don't think is any better.

Go Rangers. They've had such a moribund franchise for so long that it's nice to see them finally having a contending team. I like the Angels but I hope the Rangers hold them off.

Still will be nice not to have to face Haren any more.

Angels acquired RHP Dan Haren from the Diamondbacks for LHP Joe Saunders, LHP Patrick Corbin, RHP Rafael Rodriguez and a player to be named.

We're unsure how the Angels swooped in and stole Haren for this package, but they certainly deserve credit for their clandestine talks with the mismanaged Diamondbacks that produced this coup. Haren has fanned a National League-leading 141 batters this season but posted just a 4.60 ERA in 141 innings. A change of scenery should do him some good, as Arizona's organizational acrimony and bullpen woes may have gotten into his head. Haren was 73-52 with a 3.48 ERA from 2005-2009. He's owed $33 million on a contract which runs through 2012 and includes a club option for 2013.

Conversely...

This is it? The Diamondbacks just traded a legitimate ace under team control at reasonable money through 2013 for a package headlined by a soon-to-be 30-year-old pitcher with one season under his belt with an ERA below 4.44. Yes, Joe Saunders was good in 2008 -- going 17-7 with a 3.41 ERA -- but the rest of his career has been more or less in line with his 2010 numbers, which include a 4.62 ERA in 20 starts. In Arizona, however, he'll be miscast as a top-of-the-rotation hurler. The player to be named in the deal, meanwhile, is reportedly a top prospect, but not Mike Trout. With such a mediocre package, it's shocking that another team didn't step in to steal Haren.

Tyler Skaggs is the PTBNL. Nice prospect to get in a Ted Lilly trade, not a Dan Haren trade. This better not drive down Lilly's trade value.

What an awful, awful trade for the Diamondbacks.

Agreed. They could have gotten one hell of a lot more for Haren, one of the most underrated pitchers in baseball. You really don't hear as much about him as you ought to.

haren is having a [expletive] year... i'm sure they would have gotten a lot more if they'd dealt him in the offseason.

he's also been very unlucky

You can't expect most GMs to pick up on that so his trade value is definitely down. Truffle is right; the Diamondbacks would have been better off waiting till the offseason.

Bobby Valentine thinks this is a stupid trade for Angels, for some reason.

I think he was thinking the Angels needed offense more than pitching. He said he thought they should/would flip him for a hitter.
