Brett Jackson is having himself a fairly craptacular July.

30% LD% and a 9/9 BB/K ratio. Seems like a BABIP thing adjusting to a new level.

mathes' numbers got even worse, as inherited runners scored (11 ER allowed). but his ERA coming into today was only 4.30 (jumped almost a point today). he's not a future chicago cub and is basically roster filler, but you always have a handful of guys like that in AAA. bobby scales is still farting around there. iowa is down 16-2; bibens-dirkx has been bad as well but he has been smart enough to give up runs after errors, so none of his five runs allowed are earned.

not many k's for rhee but a solid outing nonetheless: 6.0 ip, 2 h, 1 r, 1 bb, 1 k, 10 go/6 fo. junior lake has another home run.

vitters has a single and a walk. chirinos' OPS in july is approaching 1.500.

Does Chirinos' have a realistic chance at being a catcher for the Cubs at any point in the future? He's 26, which is old for AA but he has shown some pretty good plate discipline throughout his career and is hitting for more power...

I'm not expecting dynamite numbers from Rhee this season; his success in my mind is mostly dependent on IP. If he gets through the season healthy and without looking disastrous, it'll be a good thing. I'm surprised the Cubs threw him to the wolves in Daytona to start the season, but he's holding his own reasonably well.

Certainly as a backup. As a starter, I don't think so. It depends on your faith in that bat, considering (as you said) his age. Kevin Goldstein did say some scouts think he could be a starter.

I agree with O_O on Rhee. This season is a success if he gets through healthy. Putting up a 4 ERA at a higher level than he's been while being in his first full season back from TJS is even better. The Ks should come next season.

i'm glad they're all really young guys and not 21 and 22 year old guys beating up on the kids.

cal or anybody, do you know anything about Frank Batista? Surprising to have a 2nd-year Dominican starting some games in Peoria, and doing fine. After I believe being injured or something early in the year?

Weird case, if in fact he's good. Not often that 5'10" RHP are significant prospects. And not often that significant Dominicans don't begin as pros until they are 20. But last year was his first year, DSL. So to skip straight to Peoria is unusual. His ERA wasnt' notable, but his K/BB were (63K/7BB in 57 innings last year, 27K/8BB in 27 innings thus far this year.)

Probably just a filler. But I was just curious whether he might be unusual in some way and perhaps have some interst/

junior lake has a .400+ obp after the all-star break—granted it's less than 30 games, and he's still striking out somethin glike twice as much as he walks, but still, at least a glimmer of hope for a young toolsy shortstop
