Roto league. Keeper League.

I was offered Brandon Phillips and a closer (my choice of Matt Capps, KRod, and I could probably talk him out of Heath Bell) for Matt Holliday, Starlin Castro, and Roy Oswalt.

Phillips would replace Figgins (who is heating up) and Polanco at 2B. Holliday would be replaced by Franklin Gutierrez (or Figgins, since I could put Dunn at OF and play anyone at U).

Would you do it? Would you try to get it done w/o Oswalt?

My thought on the trade would be if the upgrade from Figgins to Phillips would be worth the dropoff from Holliday to Gutierrez. I don't really see Gutierrez being overly valuable, but maybe I'm underrating him.

It seems like you'd lose more steals than you'd gain power, but I guess it depends on who you'd be benching if you went with the Figgins to U and Dunn to OF scenario. Another important question would be, do you need saves pretty badly? If so, the closer part of the deal becomes more valuable. I'd probably pick Bell as the closer since he'll either get save opportunities if San Diego stays good or be traded somewhere where he'll get saves.

I might try to give somebody less valuable than Oswalt in the deal, though if it fills needs I don't think you're really overpaying.

I'm a comfortable 8th out of 10 teams in net saves. With a 3rd closer (have Broxton and Brian Wilson), I'd have a good shot at jumping up to 4th in saves with an outside shot at 3rd. Plus, KRod or Bell would allow me to lower my ERA and WHIP.

I'd probably do the trade myself then. It'd be preferable if you could get it done without Oswalt, but I think you're getting a good deal either way since you seem to really need saves.

So, I just made a huge blockbuster 3-team trade in this roto league.

I give up: Matt Kemp, Matt Holliday, Clay Buchholz

I get: Wainwright, KRod, Brandon Phillips, Brett Gardner, Manny Ramirez, and Josh Beckett

My lineup would be:

C-Posada

1B- Votto

2B- Phillips

SS- Hanley

3B- Longoria

OF- BJ Upton, Gardner, Manny

U- Dunn

SP- Price, Hughes, Oswalt, Wainwright, Beckett, Lester

RP- Broxton, Wilson, KRod

I take a hit in HR, RBI, SLG (actually, I am getting 2 HRs more so far this year). But should get a boost in AVG, OBP, runs. My fear is Manny and Gardner going into the tank and Holliday having a big 2nd half like last year. My pitching though should get better as Wainwright is better than Buchholz in ERA, WHIP, Ks, and QS. KRod provides ERA, WHIP, and saves. Beckett is just gravy if he comes back strong.

What do you think?

I like that deal. As you said Wainwright is an improvement over Bucholz, so basically the deal is Kemp/Holliday for KRod/Phillips/Gardner/Manny/Beckett.

The potential is there for Beckett to be the best player in that deal and Phillips/Manny could be similar to the power numbers of Kemp/Holliday.
