While I havnt heard anything else about it, I was listening to the score and they were talking about Mike Lowell as a trade target if Aramis needs to miss significant time. Now if were in the race, and we need a replacement for Ram, we could do a lot worse than Lowell. However, what a desperate management team would give up for the 3-4 month rental makes me cringe. While I doubt they'd give up Cashner or Vitters, I could definitely see them giving up J Jax and then some.

Lowell might be a decent option if the Red Sox eat 80% of his contract and take a low-A prospect. Otherwise, Baker (if healthy), Fontenot, and Tracy should be able to fill in.

I know that there is concern in some quarters that Hendry may make a desperate play to keep his job by dealing our top prospects for a stopgap solution (3B, bullpen), and he may, but the idea of acquiring Mike Lowell in exchange for anything of value (JJax?!) is insane.

Lowell is making $12 million this season. He's hitting .238/.333/.365/.698 in limited duty due to age, injury and ineffectiveness. If the Sox trade him anywhere, it will be a salary dump move for organizational filler. He has near zero value. I doubt we need to get worked up about this.

It's probably not fair to leave out that better players are ahead of him on the depth chart.

He's been trade bait since before the season started. They just haven't found a team willing to cough up what they want in order to deal him. That actually worked out in their favor when David Ortiz started out so badly, as Boston platooned Lowell with Ortiz. Realistically, Lowell can only play 3b, 1b and DH. They have Youkilis and Beltre that can play 3b, and Victor Martinez and Youkilis that can play 1b.

Very true. My point remains, however, that no prosepect of consequence will be offered in exchange for Mike Lowell.
