Cubs Trade Sam Fuld To Yankees For PTBNL

MESA, Arizona -- Just four days before Opening Day, and only two days after the Cubs disappointed outfielder Sam Fuld by optioning him to Triple-A Iowa, the ballclub sent Fuld to the New York Yankees early this morning for a player to be named

Yes, this is an April Fools joke posted on BCB, but I love how USA Today picks it up anyway.

It was somewhat believable. Dropped below Colvin in the Cubs OF depth chart, the Cubs looking for a taker for a player who is a AAAA player at the moment and can't get enough ABs to prove himself.

Going to the Yankees was the only questionable part.

It's not that it wasn't believable so much as it was aiming so low. If you really want to pull off a prank of this kind, even just briefly, try something like saying the Cubs traded Soto to the Red Sox or something along those lines that'll really get people worked up instead of centering around a player that Cubdom would collectively shrug their shoulders over.

It's not really believable at all, IMO. Colvin only beat out Fuld for the last spot in the outfield due to a ridiculously hot ST. Colvin needs to be playing everyday in AAA and attempting to improve on his below tolerable OBP. I'm pretty certain the two will be flopped around sooner rather than later, as Fuld's highest upside is probably nothing more than a 5th outfielder.

If they are converting Colvin to that role now, then they are in fact giving up any hope that he has a future any better than Fuld.

Maybe if theyd gone with Mike Fontenot or Sean Marshall they would have turned some heads, but come on now.

Plus, the Yankees already have a Sam Fuld clone on their 25 man roster. I think his name is Brett Gardner or something like that.

As a regular at BCB, let me explain why Fuld was selected. There is another regular over there that is a good friend of Al's who is a Fuld fanatic, so to tweek her as well as everyone else there, Fuld was the subject of the April Fools joke.

Maybe it really will happen:

From MLBTR:

Yanks Could Be Shopping For Outfielder Soon

By Zach Links [April 3 at 2:58pm CST]

Some in the industry are already wondering if the Yankees could be in the market for outfield help soon, writes Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

Both Randy Winn and Marcus Thames have struggled this spring, though Thames officially made the club's Opening Day roster today. The club may find themselves uneasy with the two veterans as starting left fielder Brett Gardner is not yet an established major league hitter. They would be especially thin in the outfield if Curtis Granderson or Nick Swisher are bitten by the injury bug.

Rosenthal writes that the Yankees figure to be more patient with Winn as he is more than four years removed from playing in the AL.

The Yankees combined investment in Winn and Thames amounts to just $2MM combined. Rosenthal writes that if one or both struggle, and Gardner also stumbles out of the gate, then the team could be seeking an outfielder quickly.

yeah if winn, thames and gardner struggle, i'm sure sam fuld will be the first name that comes to brian cashman's mind.

With Holliday and Bay unavailable, I would think Fuld would be the next best option. =D>

It sounds like the Yankees are looking for a 5th OF. If they were looking for a starter obviously Fuld would not be in the discussion. However, if you think of it in terms of Thames vs Fuld, Fuld makes more sense defensively and, if he's not hitting, Thames is pretty much useless. Fuld wouldn't cost anything so its not completely absurd especially considering that the Yankees lineup could probably carry an all defense OF if Swisher or Granderson got hurt.
