this was the average line of the top 30 1B last season: 85 R, 30 HR, 99 RBI, 4 SB, .285 AVG. the bottom line is, it shouldn't be particularly hard to find a 1B who is good at hitting, and you shouldn't pay big dollars for derrek lee.

Actually if you eliminate the 1B who are HR hitters, but most likely unavailable it brings your average line way down. I would assume that Pujols (47), Fielder (46), Howard (45), Tex (39), Cabrera (34), and Morneau (30) won't be available. That leaves possible acquistions at Gonzalez (40), Pena (39), or Dunn (38) or a gigantic dropp-off player.

This is true. I was thinking more towards the end of this year though. Assuming Vitters plays in AA this year (and does well, which i suppose is no guarantee), I was wondering if they would really sign a player like Ramirez to a 3 year deal when they have their young sensation only about a year away from the big leagues.

They say that Vitters, if he reaches his potential, will have the kind of bat that they would make room for somewhere. They could keep Ramirez at 3rd and put Vitters in LF, RF or first. They could also move Ramirez to first and put Vitters at 3rd.

We won't have a problem if Vitters and some of these other youngsters reach their potential, but we haven't been very lucky with position players reaching their potential.

Of course. Which is why they won't hesitate to give Ramirez another 3 year deal- or at least if they don't it won't be because they don't want to block Vitters.

Anyone think Ramirez will eventually end up at 1B for the Cubs? Maybe not next year but if Vitters is ready and Ramirez is still around it makes sense right?

In an imaginary world why not move Ramirez to 1B and acquire HRam via trade!
