I'm a big Lee fan, but Lee, STFU.

What a racist. Sounds like Lee is being the racist here. "If it were a white guy he wouldn't be called the anti bradely".

I think the whole point is Byrd seems to be very positive and always in a good mood. And he IS going to be better than Bradely in #'s and in attitude (my opinion). It has NOTHING to do with race, and NEITHER did that comment. Derrek Lee, you need to see past the colors and stop seeing it as black and white. You racist.

Racism doesn't mean what you think it means.

i think the problem lee's having is that the comparisons are unfair to both guys

people are propping byrd up like "he's the opposite of that loudmouthed bradley that we all hated so much," which is unfair to bradley, but it's also unfair to byrd, because he's only getting compared to milton because he's a black guy.

although it would probably be more racist if we had replaced milton with like rocco baldelli, because there would be this "well at least we have this nice hard-working white guy in the of now that looks like me." undertone to everything.

that's a good point

i was kind of disappointed to see bruce take a shot at bradley while talking about byrd's good attitude

Why would you be disappointed by facts? It's no secret that Bradley and the media did not get along, now it appears they are happy that the guy that replaced Bradley on the roster has a better attitude or deals better with the press. The comparison's are going to come in all year.

How is that a good point? It's racist because they compare Byrd/Bradley because they are both black? But it would have been MORE racist if Bradley's replacement had been white? That is terrible logic and sounds to me like everything is racist by default.

I have yet to see any reporter or media, claim any type of connection when comparing Bradley/Byrd due to race. In fact, some reporters have even pointed out the connection to the Rangers (including DeRosa) or that they were coming off career or near career years (including DeRosa) etc.

Byrd just happened to be Bradley's replacement and just happened to be black. Could race be a factor in some idiot's comparisions? Sure, but most fans and media care more about the product on the field than the race of the players.

Posted

Maybe, just maybe, they were compared because they are current and former Cubs outfielders, and it has nothing to do with race.

I'll echo the previous poster - I'm a big Lee fan too, but STFU.

Lee is pointing out a real phenomenon but picking out a bad example. Players do tend to get compared to players of the same race. I don't know if that counts as racist or not.

But anyone the Cubs picked up this offseason was going to be the "everything Bradley wasn't" because it's very important to convince themselves and others that Bradley was the big meanie who ruined their season.

Yep!

Yeah, I agree with everything said here. Also, the whole habit of calling someone a racist who doesn't pretend we are in some sort of post-racial utopia is not contributing anything positive. First, anyone who does this doesn't know what racism is. Second, having that kind of attitude prevents any sort of real and meaningful discussion about race from happening. There are ways to say that you disagree besides telling a person to shutup, and we should all try to show some respect to where everyone is coming from.

try reading imb's post again. focus on "probably" and everything that follows "because" (or basically everything you didn't bold).

it wouldn't necessarily be worse if a white guy had been the new CF, but it seems extremely likely that the typical "hard working, nice guy, grit, plays the game the right way" stuff would have been spouted, which would be even worse than the bradley-byrd stuff.

your posts in this thread don't make much sense.

i'm disappointed that he took a shot at a guy that has been off the team for months and has already recieved way more criticism than he deserves.

i expect that garbage from the common media, but i thought bruce was better than that.

That was Marlon Byrd, who had just got done with a spirited batting-practice session with new hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo. Now, if only another former Texas outfielder had tried to have that much fun last year…oh never mind.

a very small jab and not a big deal at all, but still. i thought it was unnecessary and kind of below bruce. that's more like something i'd expect from steve stone.

Ahh. Well, I can see how that can be read a few different ways, actually. But, I get your point. I read it as Bruce wishing that Milton let stuff bounce off of him better than it does, and maybe we'd be watching Bradley take batting practice with Jaramillo in good spirits this year instead of Byrd.

I think people are being overly sensitive in regard to the Bradley criticism. Bradley treated the media badly by all accounts and now they are getting their revenge. In regard to Bruce's comments, those were from his blog, which is much more informal than his newspaper stories. His blogs tend to be more of his personal thoughts and comments.

I dunno, Marlon's got some guns, I wouldn't mess with him or he might give you a black guy.

wait, you're saying that the media is the bigger victim when it comes to milton bradley? that's a pretty interesting spin on that situation.

the media has done way more to bradley than he has ever done to them... and it's not really close at all. what has bradley done to the media? been not friendly to them after they were out to get him the second he signed with the cubs?

Not at all, I'm just saying that it is hardly surprising that the media is unloading on Bradley at this point.

you said that the media was getting revenge. revenge for what? it was the media that went after bradley hard, not the other way around.

the media didn't get enough when they trashed bradley for 6+ months? they need to get more shots in on him now after he's gone?

actually, bradley is the one who has taken the high road since he got traded. i haven't heard a single thing come out of his mouth about anything related to the cubs or the media since he was traded. meanwhile, chicago media and stupid cubs fans are still taking shots at him constantly for no reason.

i'm not a bradley fan at all, but it's just sad at this point. the dude is gone.

I guess it is all a matter of perception. Those beat reporters and the other media guys were around him almost every day during the season, and not one of them has much positive to say about Bradley. Now maybe there is/was a mass conspiracy against Bradley, but I doubt it.

And in regard to him being gone, DeRosa was gone last season, but that didn't stop most of the media from going over how great he was on the Cubs. Get used to it, unfortunately, they will be talking about Bradley all year this year.
