Bedard back to the Mariners

SEATTLE -- The Seattle Mariners and left-hander Erik Bedard are getting close to a one-year contract, pending a physical, a person with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Thursday because the Mariners have not announced the deal.

The contract is expected to have a base salary for a fraction of $7.75 million the 30-year-old Bedard made last season, and it would likely include incentive clauses.

Seattle is really having an amazing offseason

They might as well sign him as long as they have the spare money. The certainly didn't get any return on their investment (players traded to Bal). And a one year deal is great. Seattle certainly looks good this year, but in the back of my mind I can't help getting that "everyone picking them to win and flopping" feeling. It's probably because Milton Badley is on their team.

While they've had a good offseason, they still have question marks in the bottom of their rotation, a so-so bullpen and an offense that has the potential to produce zero 20-homerun hitters. I still think Texas and LA are better.

As long as they got King Felix and Lee taking the ball 2 out of 5 games their rotation will be above average. If Bedard can even give them 10ish starts in which he pitches like he used to and they can get league average/replacement level production out of another starter or two they will be fine. I think the thing that holds them back is that they lack OBP/SLG in their lineup and they don't really have middle of the order bats. Bradley, Lopez, Kotchman, and Gutierrez are all nice complementary bats but not guys that should be 3-4-5 hitters in a lineup. Figgins and Ichiro 1-2 at the the top should be fun to watch though.
