With the idea that backloading Byrd's contract allows us to have more financial flexibility and possibly making 1-2 more moves I would like us to sign one of Orlando Hudson or Felipe Lopez and then roll out a lineup of

Fukudome RF

Hudson/Lopez 2B

Lee 1B

Ramirez 3B

Soriano LF

Byrd CF

Soto C

Theriot SS

P

Like this the most. I want Lopez more than Hudson though. I think Lopez should hit lead off if we sign him though.

Lopez has been too inconsistent for a multi-year deal, I think. If we could get him on a 1-year deal, I might have some interest, but generally he's only been a slight upgrade over Baker/Fontenot and wouldn't be enough of an upgrade for a 2-3 year deal. And that's assuming Baker's year last year was a complete fluke.

I'd be much more interested in Hudson, but not on a big money deal. If we could get him for a 2-year, $5 million per year deal, I might consider it. Any more and I'd lose interest.

Theriot really is a taditional #2 type hitter. Solid .avg, solid OBP and some speed, but not enough of any to hit leadoff. let the 3-5 guys(6 too with a good lineup) hit for OPS, but not everyone is going to OPS .900. Hes more a #2 hitter than he is a 7-8 hitter who are generally .250-.260 hitters, sometiems with a touch of power, sometimes not..

That doesn't matter. At all.

The traditional lineup is nowhere near optimized... at all. It takes players who are not among your best hitters and gives them the most plate appearances on the team. This is due to an overemphasis on speed, which is ironically better utilized when batting in front of players with less power.

I like them both more than Fontenot or Baker. I wouldn't mind either one. Lopez has loved playing the NL Central the past two years, granted both were in limited time.

Yep.

Also: Theriot consistently has a high GIDP percentage. Is that ideal as a #2 hitter? (Not a rhetorical question).

Both could be better than Fontenot or Baker, but I don't think either will be better enough to give them a multi-year deal. Hudson is probably a better bet to be an improvement (because of his three straight .800+ OPS seasons before last year), but Lopez is a pretty good bet to be right around a .770 or so OPS - which a Fontenot/Baker platoon could probably match or come close to.
