Carrie Muskat writes another Pulitzer-worthy article on cubs.com. As appealing as that 5.80 ERA and 1.66 WHIP are, I think better money would be spent given to Cubs fans directly for the steaming pile of crap we are going to have to endure in 2010.

really, you're looking at ONE YEAR'S worth of stats?

3 year splits: 3.51 ERA, 1.187 WHIP

5 year splits: 3.61 ERA, 1.178 WHIP

It's safe to say last year was the outlier

Why does Muskat takes so much grief over writing her articles for Cubs.com? I thought the article was fairly informative, and considering the off season so far, I'm sure it takes some work to get a story together.

Her articles are all puff pieces. It's PR, not journalism. The fact that it takes effort is meaningless.

She works for Cubs.com, what do you expect?

I expect to ignore her pointless articles, which is what I do. But I was answering your question.

I can hear the Grabow/Capps exchange now:

Grabow: This place is great. It's just like Pittsburgh but with a full stadium, a ton of undeserved money and a ton of day games so you can go get drunk after all of them

Capps: How are the women?

Grabow: A hell of a lot better than Pittsburgh

Capps: I'm in. 2 years/$18 million sounds great!

That (PR) is what she's paid to do. It's kind of dumb to criticize her for doing her job. Even if she wanted to write and publish something that criticized the Cubs, she wouldn't be allowed to and the negative part of the story would be cut out.

Just because it's her job doesn't mean you can't criticize her work. It's a columnists job to offer an opinion that drives readership, even if it's a dumbass opinion. Can I not criticize the dumbass opinion because he's doing his job.

A fair point sir. Thank you for seeing the bigger picture.

Those are two completely different jobs.

The columnist has a choice on what to write, whether that is positive or negative, right or wrong. As long as it drives readership, the newspaper/magazine doesn't care. The journalist has a job to state the facts and report on a situation whether it's positive or negative. PR people aren't getting paid to criticize the people that she work for. PR people aren't getting paid to be negative about the team (and any negative things they write are, as I said, certainly edited out).

Muskat's job is to write things that make the Cubs look good and put a positive spin on all things Cub related, even if it's not necessarily a good thing. It's fine to criticize her work if she gets facts wrong or doesn't know certain things that she should know as it pertains to the Cubs. But all she's doing is her job which is PR. It doesn't make sense to criticize Muskat for writing puff pieces when that's exactly what she's paid to do.

If you're expecting hard hitting journalism from Muskat, you're crazy.
