You do realize how bad he's been, right?

Oh he's turrible now.

So why would they opt to re-sign him instead of going after the other FA's?

For the same reason they signed a slightly above average Luol Deng to $70 million. I don't want them to get sign McGrady, but I wouldn't put it past the Bulls.

I would, because it would require him to outplay the FA's available. He won't. Quite frankly, it's a stupid conclusion to think that such a scenario is likely to happen.

i think he made the mistake of not realizing the value of mcgrady's expiring and is now scrambling of ways to cover up his mistake insetad of just admitting it

Sweet getting run out of the building by the Knicks.

One of these days you will finally understand that this is not a good team.

yeah, i really couldn't care less. funny how i've been checking boards constantly over the past few days to see what they can do at the deadline, but i barely check the scores of the actual games.

what this team does right now is really extremely meaningless

I still maintain that making the playoffs is important in the FA beauty contest and should at least be a consideration when making deals. Cutting salary is more important but there needs to be a viable team left.

Plus I just love the playoffs and last years was awesome.

whether we finish 7th in the conference and make the playoffs or finish 9th or 10th and miss out is not going to change the decision of the FAs we're after. seriously, it's not.

if you want them to make it just so you get to experience playoff basketball, that's fine. i dont agree with it, but i could see somebody wanting that.

the bulls have traded salmons to the bucks for the expirings of kurt thomas and fransisco elson.

would have been nice to get a pick, but this trade gets the job done. the most important thing was getting rid of salmons contract.

now if we can make one more trade (hinrich or thomas prob) for more expirings, this will be a very good trade deadline and set us up nicely for the offseason.

Pretty much, and that's been my expectations going in. It was obvious why they opted to not bring Gordon back and that this would basically just be a placeholder year at best until the FA fest. I want certain players on the team to do well and continue to develop, but anyone acting like this team playing poorly like it's some kind of travesty or heartbreaker simply is not paying attention at all.

That said, I will be filled with furious anger after the deadline passes and Hinirch is still on this team. It's appalling how many wide open jump shots he misses.

Tyrus will likely be moved, but it's not like that makes a difference money-wise since his deal was up after this year anyway, right?

At best the Bulls can offer equal or less money to any of the FA targets. So of course how good the roster is currently plays a role. It's different for every guy but it has to go into the equation. Supposedly these guys care about winning so if you can't beat anyone on price you better bring some other things to the table. It's just nutty to assert that the talent level of the team, reflected in its conference standing, doesn't make a difference.

And if we didn't sign a single FA the experience for Rose and Noah alone in the playoffs is valuable. I think that was clearly illustrated last year. Those were big, pressure packed games that generated a ton of national interest. Game 6 was voted the Playoff Game of the Decade and the series as a whole were voted best of the decade on some TNT special they just ran. That has value to the guys on the team. You can't tell me the front office didn't learn anything about Noah in that series.

And aside from all that, I have no clue as to why you wouldn't care if a team you're ostensibly a fan of makes the playoffs. They can be outrageously entertaining on its own merit.

and figured "qualifying offer" was something similar to arbitration with baseball.

i mean, i'd prefer they make the playoffs, i just dont really care because it seems so futile. they aren't coming close to a title so it just feels so meaningless to me. plus outside of rose/noah and maybe deng at times, this team isn't that likeable. hinrich is annoying, salmons was annoying, VDN is an idiot, tyrus is a douche, etc. when i check the scores, i'm much more concerned with the performance of deng/rose/noah than i am with the actual score.

i want to win a title, and i dont believe that anything that happens over the rest of this season (other than trades) increase the likelihood of us coming close to one any time soon.

i'm really excited for the offseason.

You have to show a product that is competitive and showing potential while still having the money to go after a big name. The Knicks might strike it rich but they're taking a giant gamble on their 2010 plan. The Bulls could strike out too but I think they're dealing from a position of relative strength compared to the Knicks (or the Nets for that matter). When you don't the hometown pricing power or the NY brand you've gotta differentiate yourself in other ways.

The Clippers, for example, have money and seemingly have talent, but they don't win ever. It's a losing culture that just permeates everything around them. The Bulls would do well to avoid it and the best way is to just win.

Same here. It's not like I'm rooting for them to fail, but I'm not living and dying with each game like they have to make the playoffs again this season. I think people acting like the Bulls have to do well to draw in the FA's are WAY overstating that theory. It's clear that Bulls do have young talent that will work well with an added superstar. Pay him his money and he'll be here.

The year that the Bulls got Rose, they weren't going anywhere if they made the playoffs. I'm glad they missed the playoffs. Imagine where this franchise would be without him. But on the other hand, last year's series against the Celtics was unbelievably exciting.

if you're hoping for another series like that (exciting and/or the bull being competetive) then you'd going to be disappointing.

the odds of the bulls making any kind of noise in the first round are very slim. we pretty much lucked out into playing a banged up celtics team last season
