I'd really like to see castillo get some more ABs

He's on the taxi squad. He can only play twice a week.

Posted
I guess Castillo will be rostered then.

Is Robinson playing winter ball somewhere?

Not that I could find.

Looks like our hitters are doing pretty well, but our pitchers, not so much. I know this is supposed to be a hitters league and a small sample size though.

The AFL is more of a scouts' league than anything else. Plus, it's one of the most hitter-friendly environments in baseball. I wouldn't put much stock into numbers and performance; especially for pitchers.

castro and vitters each had ground ball singles to CF; castro's was on the first pitch and vitters was on a 2-0 pitch. castro is SS and vitters is DH. cashner is starting got a ground out, line out and strikeout for a perfect first.

cashner's third inning: four pitch walk, seven pitch K, pop out, fly out

castro grounded a single to left on a 1-1 pitch in the bottom of the third; vitters flied out on a 2-0 pitch. it's 10-0 mesa after 3.

fourth inning for cashner: 4 pitch K, ground out, 5 pitch walk, ground out. he was taken out after 4 innings despite throwing only 44 pitches. final line was 4 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K, 4 GO/4 FO, 44 pitches, 25 strikes. of course the guy who relieved him gave up a single and home run right away.

Kevin Goldstein[/url]"]Arizona has been good to the Cubs system

Andrew Cashner, RHP, Cubs (AFL: Mesa)

Yesterday's stats: 4 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K

Whatever order you want to put them, Cashner, along with infielders Josh Vitters and Starlin Castro, are the top three prospects in the Cubs system, and all of them are having outstanding seasons so far for Mesa. Four no-hit innings are even more impressive considering the offensive context of the league, and his stuff matched the stats, as he sat at 92-96 mph with his fastball, and his slider is a wipeout offering at times.

Huh, it just happened. From today's game notes:

C Michael Brenly (CHC), son of former Diamondbacks manager Bob Brenly, has been added to the Solar Sox roster to

replace C Welington Castillo (CHC).

I guess Welington's hurt.

Maybe they've seen enough and don't want to show other teams any more. If he kept playing well in the AFL the Cubs would have to roster him. This way there's still some doubt.

Starlin Castro, SS, Cubs (AFL), 2-for-4, R, 2 RBI, SB, CS, K: Castro is tied for the league lead with a .423 batting average (22-for-52), but his overall line of .423/.462/.462 shows that there are precious few secondary skills.

I really don't know what else you could ask for from a 19 year old SS.

well identifying his lack of patience/power is fine, but it really is nitpicking. how many 19 year old middle infielders from latin america show good power and patience? he's shown a good glove in the AFL and leads the league in batting average as the second-youngest player in the league. that's fine.
