Minor League Discussion & Boxes 7-31-2009

Carpenter pulled after 54 pitches. I'm hoping he was on a strict pitch count and it wasn't anything injury-related.

I am guessing it had something to do that through 3 innings he had given up 5 H, 2 HBP, and 29 of his 54 pitches were for strikes.

I think Cashner's getting real close if the reports on the change being real solid now are true. It depends on who's grading I guess. There was a time this year, during Jay Jackson's really hot streak, that I thought he was close.

Larry Suarez has been so disappointing that I didn't even realize that he'd been demoted.

On a side note, probably not someone that gets a lot of attention, but anyone know what's up with Albert Hernandez in DSL Cubs1? I was always mildly intrigued by his bat, particularly considering that DSL strike zones are considered to be larger. I haven't seen his name for a week. Probably doesn't profile as a big time guy to look at, but he's been a solid producer in DSL for a couple years now. Granted ... it's DSL so maybe I should stop checking those box scores.

That was it. He was really wild. He almost hit Cyle Hankerd in the face. I think a few runners got by on wild pitches. He had good stuff though. His fastball reached 98 once, but I think that could've been a fluke, because it was on a pitch high and outside, it was a little wild and might've played tricks with our radar gun, because his fastball sat anywhere between 91-96 all night. I think a reason for his success is his fastball, it appears he can do what Rich Harden does and vary the speed of it within that speed range. It's pretty deceptive. Also his slider has some wicked bite to it, but he didn't really have it under control. Overall I think he's got some serious talent that still needs a lot of work, but I'm no scout that's just my personal opinion based off of seeing him throw 3 innings, which isn't much, but it's what I saw.

Uhhhhh... was a long ass night, don't remember much else. I'll go through the game footage later today along with the rest of the stuff. Got the day off today and tomorrow. I'll try and piece together Carpenter and Cashner's starts pitch by pitch. Could take a while though, I have to grab all the videos off the hard drive from their root directory and they aren't labeled to identify the play, it's all 0731090001.mov and crap. I'll get it done though.

Vitters out again. Bah.

Do we know what Vitters' injury is?

Not sure how reliable this person is:

Josh Vitters has missed the last few games with a minor hand injury, he should be back soon

Confirmation from the Daytona News-Journal:

Daytona 3B Josh Vitters missed his fourth straight game because of a hand injury.

Antigua promoted to Peoria.

Good. I was looking at his stats just last night thinking, "this guy deserves a promotion".

Another guy who is close to deserving a promotion just on his numbers is Jeffrey Beliveau. He also is a year young for his league so I'd like to see how he does at Daytona.

I think I prefer Jeff "mini-Rich Hill" Beliveau to stay at Peoria. I tend to think that the MWL is a better place to tinker with delivery, fix approaches than the FSL.

I don't think I'd mind too much if he got bumped up this year ... but I'd rather see him get some more down at Peoria. If they feel he can fix things and become a solid starter, then bump him to Daytona for 2010. If not, then kick him up to Tennessee to work out of the pen in 2010.
