I always liked the phrase "roughly smooth" that my fluid dynamics professor would use. Meaning, we're going to assume laminar flow and a smooth surface even though there is some friction on the surface. Therefore it is "roughly smooth."

I love when I go to a minor league game, sitting by the bullpen when the starting pitchers are warming up. The noise the ball makes going through the air is awesome for some reason. Then I love the noise a catcher's glove makes when the ball hits it.

That's why I love going to baseball practice. The sound of the ball when it goes through the air, when it hits the glove,... is soothing for some reason. I also love the sound of the ball being hit. When I'm at bat, I can hear when I make good contact.

Yeah and best of all what you feel when you make good contact ... or actually what you don't feel, which is torque. Physics geekspeak for hitting the ball on the screws: ball hits the center of percussion of the bat (sweet spot), where no reaction torque is tranferred back to the hands.

I love that as well as the sound that is created. The "whack!" sound of a wooden bat is cool enough, but the "PING!" of metal bats in college is awesome.
