The Brewers don't have the upper level pitching prospects to get a deal done, and really, they should probably stay as far away from Peavy as possible. It's way too much money to guarantee to a guy who'd likely be a 3.50+ ERA guy at Miller Park, not to mention the fact that it would absolutely cripple the franchise once he went down with an injury. It'd be an incredibly short-sighted move that would also be unlikely to pay off.

If I were a Cubs fan, I'd probably actually root for Peavy to end up on the Brewers if he isn't going to Chicago. Short term it'd be bad for the Cubs, but it'd be a good way to guarantee that the Brewers wouldn't have the money to keep anyone other than Braun while also cleaning out the farm system.

I'll probably laugh out loud when Peavy nixes a deal to either of those teams.

IIRC, the Cardinals are rumored to be one of the 4 NL teams he would definitely accept a trade to.

I think rumor is that the 4 teams he would accept with no question are the Cubs, Dodgers, Cardinals, and Astros.

I don't think the word was "definitely". I think it's more like he might be willing to accept a trade to one of those teams. There's that part of the equation, then there's the part where St. Louis magically comes up with the package that is good enough to get Peavy. I really don't see what they could offer right now that would make Towers want to make a deal.

The Brewers would be making the same mistake they made last year by making a deal with the Padres for Peavy. I'm not so sure they have enough to get a deal done either.

I'd say neither has anything close to resembling a package of Aaron Poreda and Clayton Richard. Yeah, I suppose Gallardo would be a nice chip, but that's just taking away from the team to add to the team and it doesn't make the Brewers better.

The Padres not only want to trade him, but ownership feels like they need to trade him. Peavy can just sit back and pick the team he really wants to pitch for at this point, and sadly or not for Kevin Towers, he's pretty much hosed on any negotiations for Peavy.

If the Cubs are out of the picture, I'll bet Peavy ends up in LA. And boy will that piss off the Padres fan base.

La Russa: Cards Seek Big Bat

By Eddie Schmid [June 4 at 8:44pm CST]

According to Matthew Leach at MLB.com, Tony La Russa longs for a big bat to protect Albert Pujols. Leach notes that La Russa "spoke like a man who has expectations, rather than hopes."

The Cardinals have been linked to Mark DeRosa recently, though La Russa seems to indicate he wants something greater. He directly refers to the past Matt Holliday discussions, and Leach notes Holliday as an "intriguing name" as he has been open to a possible trade away from Oakland. La Russa indicated that the club has some financial flexibility, but wants to avoid anything "unreasonable."

It appears the Cards want another bat, not pitching.

Even if one of them get Peavy, we still have a better rotation.

That's not really true at all

If Zambrano and Harden are healthy, yes it is.

if carpenter is healthy, no it's not

I'd be a bit worried if the Cardinals got Holliday.

Agreed.Question is what would they have to give up, and would they do it? Would they be able to re sign him to a long term deal? That would be bad news.
