I should know the answer to this, but I don't. Does the Cubs contract with Fukudome allow them to send him to the minors if they desire?

I don't know for certain, but they should be able to unless there's an explicit clause in there that says they can't. As far as mlb is concerned, he has three options remaining and only has one year of service time.

If he continues to struggle, the Cubs could send him to Iowa in hopes that he works it out there.

If he does get off to a bad start, I suppose it would be more proactive than benching him.
