I had a plan of what I wanted to spend per spot going in, and that really helped me. I went over it early to ensure I got my top tier guys, but I was able to get it back later when I had more money than most(my other 5-6 starters combined cost as much as it did to get Halladay). It's light on pitching, especially with Price starting in AAA, but I'm real happy with it. I'm hooked on the auction style.

Do you mean you had a plan of $/position? Like "I'm going to spend $20 on my 1B, $25 on my top SP, no more than $8 on 2 more SPs, $20 on one closer, $5 on the other, etc."

I really liked the auction style, but I'm trying to figure out a better strategy for the next time around.

Yeah. It was something like this:

C - 15

1B - 15

2B - 30

3B - 30

SS - 35

OF - 20

OF - 10

OF - 5

OF - 3

OF - 3

UT - 2

All 3 BN - 2 each

SP - 25

SP 2-6 - 5 each

RP - 20

RP - 5

P - 3

It worked well for me, although I think I got lucky that I was able to fill in most of my rotation and outfield for less than my budgeted amount.

Thanks. That makes sense. I didn't prepare b/c I didn't have time and didn't think I'd be able to make the draft anyway.

I was surprised how many guys could be had for under $3 (I got 9 players for $3 or less). Let alone the quality left when people were filling out their rosters for $1 each. I guess a 10-team league will do that. Though, I do wonder how much the group's collective inexperience led to overpaying early and steals later (Soria going for $19 while K-Rod went for $7 as a prime example).

Posted
It was a lot of fun. But it was my first auction draft and I hadn't the foggiest idea what I was doing. And I missed the first 10 minutes or so and then got interrupted by my son too. I still like my team, though there's a few guys I wish I didn't end up with and a few I missed out on by being late. Only takes one auction to realize you need to keep some money for the end when the real steals happen (K-Rod went for like $7 at the end when Motte went for $4 early, e.g.).

yeah k-rod went for $10. at that point i really wished i hadn't spent $20 on mo rivera. motte went for $7; i figured cards fans would be all over him so i'm not surprised that he went early and for a higher price than he would have in most leagues.

who the hell nominated/drafted gordon beckham???

That was thrill. He was down to like 20 bucks really fast. He also nominated Zito.

(a) i can't believe someone bid $2 and took zito away from him

(b) you can actually nominate decent players and get them for a dollar... you don't have to nominate guys who won't see the major leagues, or guys who are awful players.

Posted
I think Zito was a joke to see if someone would take him. There was a lot of driving up prices by people who didn't really want players.

yeah i did that to a couple of autodraft people.

I was trying to get Vance to try to drive up the price on Zito and end up with him because he was doing it to all of my nominations. Instead my friend Matt ended up with him.

who's the other GRB person in the league? four of the five have GRB at the beginning of the name but the fifth one does not.

seems pretty even so far, GRB people are in 2nd, 6th, 7th and 10th.

(a) who dropped soto?

(b) i had doumit and he got hurt, so thank you.

you're welcome. I dropped Soto to pick up Bengie Molina. If I were you, I'd have picked up Molina a few days before you picked up Soto.

Posted
maybe soto just sucks now, i dunno. i just have a hard time believing that a guy who was really good last year can fall apart in a few months.

Sure, he might be .280/60/20/80/0 again if he bounces back the next 4-5 months. But other than last year's OPS, that's pretty close to what you'd get from Molina for the last several years: .280-ish, 40 R, 16-20 HR, 80 RBI. Given Soto's weight issues and the fact that this slow start has lasted 6 weeks or so, I was happy to take a shot with Molina (with Inge as well) than hope Soto turns it around soon.
