John Patterson calls it a career at 30

Free agent John Patterson said Wednesday that he is retiring from baseball because of persistent pain in right forearm.

Patterson is just 30, but he's spent the last three years battling soreness and two surgeries haven't done the trick. "I started throwing about a month ago and it hasn't been going well," Patterson said. "I have my good days and I have my bad days. So I decided to not play any more. I'm going to retire." If the pain goes away, he could always come back. If not, he finishes what was a promising career 18-25 with a 4.32 ERA. In 2005, his one full season as a major league starter, he had a 3.13 ERA and 185 strikeouts in 198 1/3 innings for the Nats.
