Step 1: Trade Derrek Lee for good prospects

Step 2: Spin prospects to Pittsburgh for Nate McClouth

Step 3: Sign Mark Texiera

Step 4: Trade Theriot for whatever prospects you can get

Step 5: Sign Furcal OR

Step 6: Spin prospects for brob and have him learn SS... (and in my imagination, he ends up being very good at SS... keep in mind, imagination != reality).

Step 7: ?

Step 8: PROFIT!!!!

Step 1: I don't see us getting good prospects for a underachieving 33 yr old first baseman

Step 2: Pittsburgh is dumb so maybe we somehow could pry McClouth from them, but not from Lee's trade prospects

Step 3: Wouldn't mind Texiera, but only if we trade D-Lee or he learns to play OF

Step 4: Trade Theriot which we'd probably get better prospects than D-Lee wouldn't mind this move either

Step 5: Sign Furcal love this step

Step 6: Keep Theriot and don't have to make Brob learn SS and spend less money

Step 8: Profit from not trading for Brob and just keeping Theriot, but we wouldnt be profiting really because Furcal and Texiera will cost a S-ton of money

Jeremy Hermida is the Carlos Quentin of this offseason. :)

I would love to get Hermida, and think he's going to be a star hitter one day. If Hendry doesn't have much money to spend this offseason, I just hope he takes a flyer, on a talented young hitter, who has struggled. So if we can trade for Hermida that would be great, but I'd also be willing to give Mark Teahan or Rocco Baldelli a shot as well. Maybe we can get lucky like Kenny Williams did with Carlos Quentin. Just add them to the mix with Pie, Hoffpauir and Fukudome. If they all fail, we still could use Johnson in CF against LH pitching, and DeRosa in RF and play Fontenot at 2b.

i am glad rocco is still playing ball...great story...but i would never want him to come to cubs...are you crazy?

I know Lou and Hendry both have a man crush on Riot, but they really should try to move him while his value is sky high.

Ryan Theriot's value is sky high?

I love how you comment on one portion of posts and leave everything else completely untouched. Or maybe my perception is affected by your never ending negativity.

And yes, sky high for him, AKA as much value as he's ever going to have.

I don't see anything wrong with signing Baldelli to a one year deal. If he gets hurt or sucks we get rid of him, whats the worse that happens? The odds are he will never be a quality player or live up to his potential, but why not give it a shot. Who knows maybe he could turn into a good platoon player or more someday.

I'd say best case scenario is Reed Johnsonish...So depending on who cost less since there both FA I wouldn't be apposed if he was relatively cheap

He's 27 I would disagree that his body is starting to decline, but on another note I know everyone wanted him as a free agent what about J.D. Drew any possibility to trade for him?

This encapsulates the Wall Street thought process. Keep it simple.

I agree with the Hendry thought process, which essentially the base of it is "It is OK to put DeRosa in RF". He is versatile! Yay!!

Obviously, we all know this is dumb, and I hope such an obviously better option comes around and it won't come down to this, especially the incredibly unnecessary Roberts trade. DeRo this year 120 OPS+, Roberts 118. There's no way adding BRob would have been worth whatever we lost in the trade, it actually would have likely made our actual production worse, especially as this doesn't even count when Fontenot played 2B and was RIDICULOUS against RHP.

What CAN we do?

Personally, I like and hadn't before thought or heard of the idea of getting Hermida. He is someone we could reasonably get, and have him possibly be worth more than what we pay in prospects. buy low. novel, I know. What would the Marlins be interested in? I guess Pie could match up decently there (if i recall, their current CF isn't great on D and is decent hitter but no big prospect or anything? could be off though), obv Cedeno is worthless to them so we can't pawn off all our "busts" that never really got a fair shake; They might be into Marshall, not sure what else or how low-level of guys they might want, Ceda/Cashner/man we don't have a whole lot in the system outside of incredibly "key" guys....

This is why we can't just trade out for Roberts/etc.

Our system is not exactly great, especially at the top. I think we may be best served to take some of our positions of strength and TRADE to fortify the system a bit if possible. Haven't considered where to aim yet, but I'm pretty sure the inevitable best guy to trade would be DeRosa. After this year, owed 5.5 this year, you'd have to imagine he would be able to bring us back some value. Then platoon Fonty/Riot at 2B and let them put up a sweet tandem year, SS is going to be tough to fill but we all know Riot isn't the answer and will be hard-pressed to match his results from this year.

If Dome doesn't get it together, than contract is going to be a massive anchor. Ugh. Hope he can, but if not maybe we should look into arranging a seppuku or something...lot we could do with that extra 11.5

If we had to, I wouldn't be opposed to trading Marmol. Yeah, I know. But damn he's going to be VALUABLE and a spot we can likely fill at some point through the ranks; we so many power arms that are not good enough to be starters that I am thinking we are most likely to have 1 or 2 solid guys coming out of Ceda/Guzman/Cashner/Veal/etc. If he could bring back a legit star you've gotta consider it, although it would help to have a non-idiot managing the team's bullpen usage, which I guess is even true with Marmol as Lou RACKED up the appearances for him.
