The second of tonight's Prime 9 episoeds (9:30 P.M. Eastern time, etc.) features the top 9 players not in the Hall of Fame but eligible. It will be interesting to see where Ron Santo ranks (I'd think he'd be near the top). It will also be interesting to see if Andre Dawson is on the list.

So far...

#9 - Lee Smith

#8 - Keith Hernandez

#7 - Luis Tiant

#6 - Andre Dawson

#5 - Tony Oliva

#4 - Dick Allen

#3 - Bert Blyleven

#2 - Mark McGwire

#1 - Ron Santo

The most glaring omission to me was Tim Raines. I think he belongs. Otherwise I agree with the choices, especially Santo at #1 and Blyleven way up there too. I bet McGwire at #2 is the most controversial.

ENOUGH WITH THE HOME RUN DERBIES ALREADY!

BACK BACK BACK BACK BACK GOOOOOONE. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Edit: While I'm at it, what the heck is up with Ken Burns's hair? Also is anyone annoyed at the romantic way he talks about old time baseball players? Maybe it's just me.

It's not so much annoying as it is... odd. Definitely strange. It doesn't help that they play soft love making music in the background

I'm totally pumped to see how east coast centric his "10th Inning" is going to be....

I imagine it is going to go something like this:

Strike - 10 minutes

Cal Breaking Gehrig - 20 minutes (WAAAY too long)

Home Run Chase - 10 minutes

Yankees Dynasty/Jeter love - 35 minutes

9/11 - Yanks v. DBacks - 20 minutes

Red Sox 2004 - 30 minutes

Red Sox 2007 - 20 minutes

Steroids - 5 minutes

I bet they'll cram the fact that the Cubs haven't won the World Series in over 100 years down our throats. Oh, and I would put money on Bartman and Game 6 being mentioned.

Doubt it. Burns spent less than 30 seconds talking about Ernie Banks and completely glossed over the '69 Cubs, didn't even mention them, in his series.

His Baseball documentary was good but it spent WAY too much time focusing on east-coast centric things, many of which didn't matter. A perfect example is that he spent more time talking about Mario Cuomo's minor league career than he did about Rogers Hornsby, Ernie Banks, and Frank Robinson combined.

I'm not going to blame Burns for this bias because, as a filmmaker, that is his prerogative. But one day when I have a bunch of time I'm going to measure the amount of time he gave to certain things. For example, he had something like 20 minutes talking about the destruction of Ebbets Field, but less than 5 minutes talking about Stan Musial.

Did anyone else see Matt Vasgersian drop the f-bomb just now? They were doing an intro type thing and he said Fernando Vina instead of Fernando Valenzuela then said "Did I say Fernando Vina? What the f*** is that?" Then the screen went black for about 5 seconds and they did it over again.

Just another reason Matty is one of my favorite people in baseball.

Can you make a list of the best players not on the list of best players not in the HOF?

I don't know if this has been posted yet, but this is some Joe Morganesque dialogue.

ugh harold reynolds. just stop. "stats are ridiculous" he says. then barry larkin says a .215 average is okay if it's "a quality .215".

good breakdown of the idiocy here

Those guys are right for the wrong reasons with regard to PECOTA. The good folks at BP should probably just give ranges and confidence intervals, because PECOTA as reported like that and used as a predictive statistic is not that reliable.

Something like, "with 90% confidence PECOTA predicts Youkilis will have a BA anywhere from .290-.260."

That said, what a bunch of neanderthals. Instead of trying to understand a different way to look at the game they automatically hate it because it is different. I guess what do you expect from a bunch of ex-players? Beane, Francona, and few others are the exception.

Posted
the irony of that segment was that they were using Youkilis as an example, and he's one guy who the "olde thyme" scouts had no use for because he was slow, fat, didn't hit for power and wasn't a great defender. Billy Beane wanted him bad, and would have landed him had Theo Epstein not been the Asst. GM of Boston at the time

i like how the ex-players have this paranoia that the nerds want to get rid of scouts and only have computers analyze baseball.

i'm still trying to find a respected stat nerd who has said that scouts are worthless. the old timers keep trying to make it a "scouts vs. stats, you have to pick only one!" argument, which is ridiculous.

We should just make this into a, "stupid things said on the network" thread.

It was either Joe Magrane, or Dan Plesac who said, "I think it would be worse for the Yankees if they lost Jeter for any length of time. His presence on the field makes them a better team." when talking about A-Rod's injury.

PECOTA does do that.
