There is an article on there today with the headline stating something about it not being likely that the Cubs make a big deal before the deadline. I'm curious as to what the meat of the article says. It's probably nothing new, but you never know.

I don't have it anymore, but you might do a google news search and see what you can find. They almost always rip those headlines off of other newspaper headlines.

Don't expect Cubs to answer CC trade

Tuesday, July 8, 2008 | Feedback | Print Entry

With CC Sabathia in Milwaukee, all eyes turn to Cubs GM Jim Hendry, writes Jay Mariotti.

Jay's right in that there will be general expectation in Chicago for the Cubs to answer. But they might as well table those expectations right now, for a couple of reasons:

1. The Cubs don't have the minor league trade resources that the Brewers do. If they did, you can bet that they would have landed Sabathia, because they would have been more likely to overpay for him, rather than haggle the way that the Brewers haggled. The Cubs, as a monster money franchise, could have afforded to take a chance and unload some prime prospects for the 2007 Cy Young Award winner -- but they just don't have the same caliber of minor leaguers. That is not going to change between now and the trade deadline.

2. Sabathia will be the only pitcher at his level to be traded before the July deadline. He is dominant (with an ERA of about 2 since his first four starts), he is healthy, and there is no other baggage, other than the question of how much pressure he puts on himself at the outset of his time in Milwaukee and how long it takes him to get settled

The Marlins piss me off and Ricky Nolasco isn't helping

As for the Cubs thing, that's standard Marriotti pessimism. I am almost 100% sure the Cubs acquire a starter before or at the deadline.

Oh, I'm pretty sure myself that Hendry will get another starter... Problem is, said starter's initials will be "R.W."

And my response will be "_.U." to James if that does result.

It should be first noted that the quoted text (and the insider piece) is Buster Olney, not Mariotti. Olney makes a reference to Mariotti's article.

Second, Olney is strictly giving his blog opinion, not citing any sources (from Oakland or otherwise) to back his assertion that the Cubs do not have what it takes to get Harden.

This is about the third or fourth time Olney has taken the stance that the Cubs have no viable trade commodities for the deadline when it comes to marquee players. In previous assertions he may have generically cited 'rival GMs in the NL' or something similar, I can't recall.

But bottom line is the blog is his opinion and comes with no insider sources.

why be honked at Mariotti? Does the truth hurt?

Wait, "honked?" I can't say I've ever heard that expression before.

Well, Mariotti looks like a moron now, doesn't he?

Well, he always does, but he was really wrong here.

Well, at least you got the first initial right. :D
