What do you guys think? Am I being unrealistic? We all agree that pitching is our top priority and the cubs defininitely need to swing in a deal in getting a Sabaithia or Harden...but what about adding another arm to the rotation --especially if we have to give up Gallagher in a trade? This would probably really deplete our farm system.

So you think they should get 2 starters?

I don't see how that is possible. Hopefully they can get one good starter. But the rest of the arms that will become available will probably not be any better than their own guys, and since pitching is already overvalued, you'll just have to pay even more using lord-knows-what as bait for two arms.

I think people put a bit too much emphasis on trade deadline acquisitions. Every year we hear about the guy who is going to put some contender over the top, but it rarely works out that way.

In '04, I was sure that Nomar was that guy. Of course we all know how that turned out.

agreed. This is why you deal for your needs in the offseason. Your prospects are less likely to be uncovered for the frauds that they are when they aren't playing :D

In the highly unlikely event that they are able to land an "impact" starting pitcher, I could see them also trying to add a strike-throwing starting pitcher. Someone along the lines of Paul Byrd.

Possibly after the trade deadline, but certainly before the deadline for adding players to a postseason roster.

I believe that there is essentially zero chance that Lou is going to let Jason Marquis throw an important postseason pitch.
