So Rafael Furcal has been playing like a man in a contract year so far. (.366/.448/.597 OPS+ 169). The downside is that he has been sidelined with back injuries for the past five games with no timetable for a return, and has been an injury risk the past few years.

Given Hendry's strong desire for Furcal a couple of years ago, plus the offensive sparkplug he could provide, should the Cubs target him for midseason? Wait until next year and give him the large contract he wants? Keep our fingers crossed that Greene becomes available?

I think LA will find a way to extend him before season's end. Some team will be dumb enough to trade for Pierre and Jones, freeing the Dodgers up to cough up enough money to extend an actual asset.

But if the Dodgers fall out of it, and the Cubs overpay in a trade, something that is not unheard for the Cubs, I could see a Furcal trade happening.

Well if Theriot and Cedeno continue to hit like this it might work out stop the Cubs from making this trade, and of course Soriano getting hot. I'd hate to give up an young pitching like Gallegher,Hill or Marshall to acquire a player like this due to having no confidence in Marquis and Lieber.

If the Dodgers fall out of it, they have Jeff Kent, Andruw Jones, Juan Pierre, Nomar Garciaparra, Derek Lowe, Brad Penny and Estaban Loaiza and others that they could consider dealing to get ready for '09.

Of all the veteran players they have, the only one they have that is a real keeper is Furcal. Considering what he's doing for the team right now, a lynching might be in order if they allow Furcal to test the free agent waters.

Of course, as well as Furcal is playing, he might prefer that road anyway. His next contract might be his last.

True, but also out of those players you named, what can bring in real value? The question is are they just wanting to shed payroll, or are they wanting to get young talent? You're probably right...a team like the Dodgers is probably about shedding payroll, and rebuilding through free agency (which has clearly worked well for them).

Jones maybe, I don't know about Pierre. Jones put up production worthy of his contract in 2 of the previous three years to his contract. Pierre not at all.

Anybody know anything about Chin-Lung Hu? I've read somewhere (can't remember where) that he's pretty much in line to replace Furcal so LA doesn't overpay him.

I think that was the plan, but the last thing I read hints that the Dodgers will resign Furcal and use Hu as trade bait.

Several of those players could bring value at the deadline. But, LA also has more youth waiting to be promoted. They have a nice core to build around with Kemp, Loney, Martin, Ethier, LaRoche, Kuroda, Billingsley, Kershaw, etc...

Thats their plan. Hu's monster season came out of nowhere and hes stinkin up the joint right now. Ronny Cedeno is a better "prospect" than Hu. I don't think they really view him as anything more than a utility player.
