It would be great to buy a used car from Lou, he would tell you everything that's wrong with it and lower the price significantly.

I think opposing teams do more research than that when evaluating players. I don't think their opinion of Matt Murton is going to drastically change because Lou said some nice things about him.

Do you really think Angelos would come running into MacPhail's office and say, "Andy! I read in the Tribune that Lou said Murton is a great option to sub and has some pop off the bench! Let's pull the trigger on the Roberts trade!"

not to mention that MacPhail is already extremely familiar with these players

Another great PR move. Now Gallagher has lower trade value along with Murton (5th OF) and Cedeno (backup to Theriot).

So you're saying to trade those 3 guys for a slightly better than average 2nd baseman?

With the way they are being treated and "showcased" to the rest of baseball, we might be lucky to get Macias. All Lou had to say was Gallagher has a shot at the 5th starter slot, Cedeno will be battling in the spring to beat out our starter at SS, and Murton is a great option to sub in LF and RF and to provide some punch off the bench. Instead we get Gallagher has no shot to start, Theriot is the starter and there's no competition at SS, and Murton is behind Fuld (and DeRosa if the O's trade happens) in the OF. It would be great to buy a used car from Lou, he would tell you everything that's wrong with it and lower the price significantly.

If there is a GM that reads Carrie Muskat articles and uses them to evaluate players, I want to deal with him regardless of what Lou tells her.

It's a long, long season and so many things can happen during it, especially regarding starting pitching. Imo, if the Cubs are 7 to 8 deep starting pitching wise they will be fine but that being said, I'm not thrilled with Leiber or Marquis but since they are vets they are getting the first shot to fail and the others still have options to be sent down, unlike the 2 vets.

The numerous wrong things Lou has said are an intricate calculated mind game designed to entangle the rest of the league in a mental death trap.

I don't buy it, but I sure hope so.

(Carrie Muskat) "What's tough is that youngsters such as Sean Gallagher may be out of luck in making the big league club. There are a lot of veterans ahead of him".

(Sweet Lou) "We'll pitch them here in Spring Training, but this is not a year for that," Piniella said. "I hate to say that, but we have veteran pitchers here to consider and they'll get every chance, first and foremost. We like Gallagher. I like [Jeff] Samardzija. But truthfully, I'd be lying if I said something like that could happen [that they'd make the big league team]. We have seven veteran starters. They're all healthy, they're all going to compete. Unless we have a streak of bad luck and we have some injuries, this is not the spring for them."

--It sounds like Piniella is not even willing to give them a chance to make the club.

There is so much I would love to say on this topic but unfortunatley I can't!!! ](*,)

Well I'm sure the kid will be alright! If you produce, good things will happen if it's with the Cubs or anyone else.

Maybe its just talk, but it doesn't sound like it. What kind of message does this send to the young guys? Hell, don't even bother trying, you don't even have a chance. Its not like the lineup if full of Nolan Ryan's, i mean we are talking Leiber, Dempster, and friggn' sean marshall. This bothers me.

It was a totally fallacious scenario anyway: I don't see Angelos running anywhere....

Stop using your brain.

The only reasonable response to anything Lou Piniella says is to TOTALLY FREAK OUT!!!

What's the big deal? So Piniella motivated the youngsters to prove him wrong - and if they don't want to do that they should want to ram it down his throat. Kudos for us having a guy managing the Cubs who knows how to play the mental games.

wouldn't the exact opposite make more sense? tell everyone that the 5 best starters make the rotation regardless of age. if lou's really doing what you're saying he is, he's trying to motivate the young guys while telling the old guys to take the rest of spring training off.

I could see that but with the 2 vets being guaranteed a salary and the young guys not, along with them having options, I don't think he'd be fooling any one by saying that Leiber and Marquis may be cut. I don't think Hendry would swallow the Marquis salary.

I see a few posters jumped on the Murton situation, but nobody mentioned Cedeno. What if Lou really gave him a chance to win the SS job? You don't think other GMs would take notice? Look at all of the trade rumors about Murton. Nobody is offering anything for him because they know he's worthless to the Cubs. What harm would it do to talk up these players instead of dissing them? The Cubs have to sell low most of the time because they have dissed the players they're trying to trade.

A perfect example is Jacque Jones.

I think the other GMs would say, "He's had 688 major league at bats and he's been awful. He couldn't hit Daryle Ward's ass if he was standing eight feet away, and isn't he the guy who was thrown out while trying to advance to second base on a walk?"

Maybe he means that he already knows that it's pretty likely that Sean will be starting in Baltimore.

Then again, they wouldn't have had him take pictures on team photo day if they had him on his way out. Maybe Marquis and Pie are gone. Yea, that's it.

Yeah I thought that too but I chose to ignore it!

I wonder if Vegas has the odds on A...if this trade will happen and B...who will it involve.

This is nothing new. We knew this was the way it would happen ever since Lieber was signed. Why get upset about Piniella stating what should be obvious to anyone that is paying attention?

The Cubs aren't going to go the whole season without a pitching injury and Gallagher would be the 1st call up. Spending a little time at AAA isn't going to hurt him. In the long run it might be better for him because he'll get regular work without the risk of getting overextended.

Oh, I was just kidding about the Dusty pic. I figured I'd do it before somebody else did.

Please direct me to the latest DeuceBaseman pile-on. I would greatly appreciate it.

Lou Piniella is going to play the best people who will help the Cubs win. He isn't going to care about salaries. He showed us this last season in the playoffs by carrying some young guys on the playoff roster.

That statement, IMO, took some "pressure" off some of the young guys.

Or maybe it's because the other team's and GM's know the players suck as much as the Cubs do.
