i wouldn't say it's stupid... i'm not sure how long he has to be down for, but i think it's only around a month, and that would keep give the d-rays another year before he hits UFA. for a small-market team like tampa, this is a necessary move. there's almost no excuse for them to have a phenom start the year with the big club unless they get good enough to compete for division titles.

well, i'm not counting on Thome getting through the year without injury, and it never hurts to have trade bait. ultimately, i'm happy with the pick, as Longoria seems like a no-brainer "keeper" for next year if he's as good as advertised
