According to ESPN's Jayson Stark, the Phillies and Pedro Feliz have agreed to a two-year deal.

Why any team felt it had to go to two years to get Feliz is a mystery. He didn't get a multiyear deal last year, and his stock certainly hadn't increased at all. The Phillies should have held firm at one year and tried to do better next winter. Feliz's addition leaves Wes Helms with no role on the team. Perhaps they'll reconsider the Marlins' offer to take on a portion of his salary. Greg Dobbs will return to a reserve role. In Feliz, the Phillies are getting an elite defender and a guy who could hit 25 homers while playing half his games in Citizens Bank Park. He'll have an awful OBP, of course, but that's less of a problem with three guys who can get on base 40 percent of the time in the middle of the order. He'll probably hit seventh between Geoff Jenkins and Carlos Ruiz.

It's a decent signing. I wouldn't be surprised if he hits 30 HRs in that bandbox. Phillie pitchers can use all the help they can get, I like this better for them than the Inge rumors.

He'll hit homeruns and play defense. That's about it.

That's "all" Khalil Greene does too, yet most of this board salivates over him

I'm thankful someone took Fleas off the market. I was getting nervous that Jimbo might pull one of his patented dumb signings.

Give me a break.

No.

It was a stupid comment. I'm really sure you were fearful that he was going to spend reasonable money on a guy who can only play the same position two of our best players and our best two backups play. Because he has a long list of disastrous signings, such as...Neifi? That's about all I got. Of course, he didn't sign Schmidt and Lugo, whom everybody pined for, so Halo Effect dictates he's just awful in every facet of his job. It's out of the realm of possibility that he might be viewed as just be a mediocre, middle of the road GM. That would require nuance.

There's a difference between "dumb" and "disastrous". Hendry has made plenty of mistakes when it comes to acquiring players, be it through trades or free agency. If you want the most egregious ones, I'm willing to throw out names such as Jacque Jones, Jeromy Burnitz, and Jason Marquis as examples of higher profile signings which he screwed up. Considering Pedro Feliz would have been a bench guy, names like Damian Jackson, Neifi Perez, and Lenny Harris all immediately come to mind. Those are just through free agency. I can happily throw out some great names he's traded for during his tenure. Jose Macias and Juan Pierre bring back all sorts of fond memories, don't they?

Come on, you don't think this team would even have considered Feliz, given Ramirez's continuing nagging injuries and our perceived lack of RH power off the bench? You don't think Hendry would have considered giving Feliz a one year contract? You think Hendry would have been fine letting Theriot, DeRosa, and Fontenot fight over the backup 3B role?

You have more faith in the man than I'd have expected. Calling him mediocre is a compliment.

damian jackson played 12 games for the cubs.

lenny harris made $800K and the cubs didn't have ARam at the time.

neifi was idiotic, but i suspect that dusty had a lot to do with that acquisition.

jose macias made $1.7m over two years.

juan pierre was acquired to be the starting cf, and he sucks. hendry overrates speed, everyone knows this.

i don't think there's a good parallel to hendry acquiring a guy like feliz. he hasn't paid $4.25m per year for a guy who has nowhere to play. if you're worried about hendry signing a lousy utility player then that's a legitimate concern, but he wasn't going to sign someone like feliz for that sort of money. and feliz wouldn't come here when there were at the very least some platoon opportunities around the league.

Yeah, that.

And Marquis, the team was 20-13 in his starts. We haven't been soapdropped in the donkey yet with that signing like everybody is convinced already happened. Sure, there is ample reason to suspect he'll be rotten the next two years, but you're jumping the gun in proclaiming it a dumb signing as it has not turned out badly as of yet. As far as we can tell, Hendry could very well be relieved of him right now (Mets) if he felt the necessity to do so.
