I got this email from Jamey Newberg....

According to T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com, the Rangers have traded outfielder

Freddy Guzman to Detroit for first baseman Chris Shelton, who exploded on

the American League in his 2005 rookie season, hitting .299/.360/.510 with

18 home runs in 388 at-bats, but who regressed a bit in 2006 and spent all

of 2007 in AAA, where he hit a disappointing .269/.381/.420 with 14 homers

in 498 at-bats.

Shelton had been designated for assignment by the Tigers several days ago,

but because Texas is trading for him before he cleared waivers, he goes onto

the Rangers' 40-man roster, taking Guzman's spot and keeping the roster at a

full contingent of 40, which at the moment means Texas cannot participate in

tomorrow morning's Rule 5 Draft.

Shelton, incidentally, was the first pick in the 2003 Rule 5 Draft, when

Pittsburgh left him unprotected and Detroit led off the draft by selecting

him. The Pirates amazingly lost five of that draft's first six picks.

Shelton (a former catcher) should go into the mix for the Rangers' first

base opening, though by no means should he be considered a lock at that

position.
