OF Cliff Andersen is a 2006 9th round pick who received above slot money.

RHP Hung-Wen Chen was signed earlier this year out of Taiwan and received a sizable bonus.

RHP Marcus Hatley is a 2006 DFE.

RHP Simon Lee is a 23-year old Korean native who was Asian scout Steve Wilson's first Asian signing.

3B Josh Vitters is of course the 3rd overall pick in June's draft.

RHP Oscar Bernard was released to get the Hawks at the 30 player roster max.

Is Josh destined to play a corner infield spot(1B 3B) or one of the corner OF spots?
Too soon to tell. He did have 3 errors in less than 10 games though.

I am no expert so I don't understand this stuff at all. The Cubs draft a guy like Vitter then both sides wait until the middle of August to get a deal done. Why? or if they are going to wait to sign him, wait until the fall instructional league to let him play. I guess it's all scrimages anyway until the player reaches the bigs.

It just seems so odd. The kid hasn't played baseball for months there is no way he can handle the talent he seeing now.

With the new CBA, the Cubs don't get to save a year of on the clock of any player drafted by letting them wait til the season after they are drafted to sign. If he's in playing shape, there's no reason not to play him - it's not like he's a pitcher who's arm might need to be protected and 10 games isn't going to make or break him. The reason it took so long to sign him was the slotting guidelines (the Cubs wanted to stay at slot while Vitters wanted to see if Moustakas went over to help himself to an over-slot deal).

I have a theory about this and it's probably crazy. Is it inconceivable to think that some hitters who struggle at Mesa will do better at Boise? Is it possible that the pitching in the AZL is so unpredictable that it throws hitters off their conceptions of what is normal, especially advanced hitters? Obviously sample size is a huge thing here, but it's something I thought about when Donaldson and Thomas both sucked it up for their (very, very, very)brief Mesa stints, then got promoted and started torching the NWL.

Either that or Mesa is so low that they tell the players to simply work on one aspect of their game. Once that is completed, they advance them.

But that's just a guess.
