It's a moot point since Gallagher is on the 40-man and wouldn't clear waivers in a million years.

It was only an example. The point is dunn won't come cheap.

He'd only have to pass through 1 team (Pittsburgh) and since Hendry and the Pittsburgh G.M. are friends, my guess is that Pittsburgh wouldn't claim him.

How would he only have to pass through one team? I thought every team got a crack at it.

Cinci would claim him for the purposes of the trade. Only teams in the NL with worse records than Cinci (Pitt) could make a claim on him before Cinci.

Gah...ok...I see what you're saying.

There is absolutely no way in hell that Dunn clears waivers through to the Cubs spot. Just not happening.

We shouldn't even be talking about it.

Hell, Tejada just did. I know Dunn is younger and cheaper, but I don't think it's completely impossible.

And someone lumped Dunn in with all the others as a "miserable option?"

Right.

From what I understand, Tejada did not clear waivers, but was claimed from them by the White Sox.

Right, but as bad as the Sox are, aren't there teams below them that could have put in a claim first? My point is that if the teams have a "gentleman's agreement," it seems unlikely that people just swoop in and bust up the deail unless it's some kind of superstar player.

If the Cardinals had a chance to claim Adam Dunn and didn't, I would annoy a lot of people with the gigantic amount of whining I would do.

Thinking that he would help you guys take the weak division or in the hope an extension would be worked out?

Extension. He is undervalued so much that I think we could get him for somewhere in the 6 year 65-70 million range which would be awfully good. Rasmus, Duncan, Dunn and Pujols would be a good foundation to build on post-Edmonds and Rolen.

My opposition to Dunn is that he doesn't help against lefties, he's horrible in the OF, he would probably cost way too much in trade, and he would have no position when Soriano comes back.

while we do have problems against lefties....

1. we face way more righties

2. defense is not the problem, offense, namely power, is. dunn remedies this.

3. we have some tradeable commodities.

4. soriano goes to right, dunn stays in left.

yeah...soriano went down earlier in the year...moved from CF to LF...so...it is only natural to assume...given the soon to be acquisition of Dunn...that he will move to RF upon his return to the club

third time is a charm, right?

i like soriano in left, i really do. but dunn is much more valuable in left, and soriano is more valuable in right. sorry, sori, you're ours for as long as the cubs want you, so you'll do what you're told.

I agree that Soriano in RF makes a lot of sense, but messing with Soriano's psyche may throw him into a funk. We can all say that it shouldn't and he should be able and willing to make the change, but we saw what happens when he's taken out of the leadoff spot. The bottom line is that you have to cater to these prima donna players somewhat whether we like it or not.

But look whos worse than the sox and find me a team that can absorb Tejadas contract and has an opening at SS.

Well, I guess I don't understand what you meant by "Tejada just did" then. And Dunn is certainly some kind of superstar player. If I am a team, like the Sox, that is just playing out the schedule this year, but plans to be good next year, then I am claiming Dunn - gentleman's agreement or not.

We wouldn't have to worry about the Sox. But the Nationals, the Dodgers, the Cardinals... yeah there are teams who would claim him before we had a shot. I don't see how our chances of Dunn are any better than hoping for the one card suckout. It's just very unlikely...

I really like Dunn, but I guess I'm just not rating him as highly as others here. If the Reds and Cubs have an informal/formal agreement that's pretty clearly solid, I don't see other teams diving on Dunn. I could easily be wrong.

For the most part, this is a different scenario than the "gentleman's agreement." If we were trying to pass someone we had no intention of trading through waivers to option him, or it's a trade for a rather minor playoff-push role player with a deal in place, yeah - you don't often have a GM putting in a claim merely to hassle. But this is a player the teams would legitimately want and he would legitimately help any club he goes to. Plus, we don't have the means to offer the Reds the best package -- that doesn't mean the "best package" is what the Reds would want but it's more stacked out of our favor. If the Dodgers or Nationals or someone were to want Dunn (and they do), they would have every motive to claim him and probably believe they could top an offer from the Cubs anyway. Of course, I could be wrong too...

whatever it is, hendry owes it to the fans to make a significant move if he can.

this team couldn't score with soriano, how are we going to score without him?

For once it would be nice to see this team actually go for it. They just sort of add pieces here and there and hope they get lucky. It looks like it will be much of the same this season.

i stumbled onto another cubs site and they were talking about us again.

vera funny.

ooh, did they say anything about me?

i couldn't tell, they were too busy laughing at their own unfunny jokes. but they were definitely discussing little ole me. apparently, i'm a darling, yay!

ah well, that's just what happens when you can't keep from having a public hippie freak-out on this board. they have to go somewhere right? i mean, they aren't just deleted from human history once tim hits that little red button and nukes their entire reason for living, are they?

my theory is that they become some sort of slow, unscary romero-esque zombies with a semblance of former personality, obsessed and yet deathly afraid of fireworks.

it'd be sweet if there really was like a big red button that Tim pushes to ban someone for life.
