weird that shark decided to bust out his one strikeout for the night so early, usually he saves it for a tough spot in the middle innings.

First batter of the game!

And the last batter of his game (in a tough spot - 2 on, 2 out).

Jeff's final line: 6 IP, 1 ER, 6 H, 2 K/2 BB, 7 GO-9 FO.

That's a really encouraging start. Hopefully he can put together a few good starts before the end of the year.

I fail to see what is encouraging about those numbers.

Well, most people would have predicted that he would have gotten shelled. 3 of the flyouts were popups, so he got 10 outs in the infield. Also, only 1 extra base hit (a double). If he can continue to keep the ball in the park and allow mostly singles, he can survive even with the low strikeout numbers.

Obviously, it would be a lot better if his secondary pitches come around a bit and he can increase those K numbers though because that raises his projection value by quite a bit. So maybe really encouraging was a bit too far, but it was definitely encouraging (as was his Daytona starts since the break).

It sounds like his change is improving based on what Mick said when Samardzija did throw it.

It'd be great if his secondary pitches were improving at a quicker rate and he had a great K/9, but I'll take the 1 ER in 6 IP in his AA debut after a near-5 ERA at Daytona.

Tennessee makes Samardzija a winner in his first start in AA. Holliman pitched an inning and two-third's of relief though. Not sure what the reasoning of that could be. He gave up a hit, a walk, and struck out two in his inning and 2/3's. Roquet recorded the save as he retired the only batter he faced. Nice game for Chris Robinson going 3/4 with a double and two RBI's. Salas was 2/3 with two RBI's and a walk. Kyle Reynolds had two singles and an RBI.

Daytona lost 8-5. Mendez went 6 allowing 7 hits, 3 runs, 2 K's/1 BB, and gave up a homer. Taylor took the loss as he got hit hard in the 2 and 2/3's innings of relief he pitched. 6 hits, 5 runs, 2 ER, 2 K's/0 BB's, 1 HR given up. Matulia went 3/5 with two doubles, a triple, and two RBI's. Harvey hit a solo shot for his 7th HR of the year.

Peoria was shelled, 14-1. Bad start for Papelbon: 4 IP, 9 hits, 6 runs, 4 K's/1 BB, and he gave up three bombs. Siegfried gave up 6 runs in the inning of work that he pitched. LeClerc was 2/3 with a triple and Lalli was 2/4. Not much on the offensive side for the Chiefs.

Iowa now down 6-4 after Howard gave up 3 in the 7th. Mateo had an ok start going 6, allowing 6 hits, 3 runs, 4 K's/2 BB's, and allowing a homer. Soto is 2/3 with a walk, Fox is 2/4, and Pie is 1/4 with an RBI.

Alburquerque was awful in the third (5 ER, 5 H, 2 K/0 BB, 2 HBP, HR) but he's still there in the fourth. Boise down 6-4.

was Samardzija facing a weak AA team or something?

That's Tampa's AA team, anchored by Reid Brignac. They're fifth in the league in hitting, third in OPS.

Much of that OPS was put up by Longoria, who is recently moved to AAA.

Still a decent team, though.

IowaCubs.com"]Pie Ties League Record In 9-5 Loss

Pie ties league's outfield putout record with 11

By Andrea Breen / Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs committed one costly error as they fell to the Las Vegas 51s, 9-5 Monday night at Principal Park.

The 51s took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning off Larry Barnes' three-run home run. It was not until the fourth inning when Iowa scored on singles by Joe Simokaitis and Carlos Rojas to drive in Geovany Soto and Matt Craig for a 3-2 lead.

Craig singled home the tying run in the fifth inning making the score 3-3. Felix Pie, who tied the league's outfield putout record with 11, gave the Cubs a 4-3 lead with an RBI single in the sixth inning, but the Cubs could not hold on.

Las Vegas' Wilkin Ruan led off the 51s seventh inning with a single and later scored on a throwing error by Rojas. Two more runs crossed the plate for the 51s before the inning would end, giving the 51s a 6-4 advantage. Las Vegas tacked on three more runs in the ninth inning for a 9-5 victory.

The Cubs attempted a rally in the ninth inning as Craig got his third hit of the night, an RBI single for the 9-5 final.

Every Cubs starter had a base hit including two each from Soto, Fox, Pie and Mike Mahoney and three from Craig in the losing effort.

Wesley Wright earned the win for the 51s and Ben Howard was tagged with the loss for Iowa.

SmokiesBaseball.com"]Samardzija shines in 6-2 Smokies win

Sevierville, TN – Jeff Samardzija made his Double-A debut at Smokies Park, throwing six strong innings in leading the Smokies to a 5-2 win over the visiting Montgomery Biscuits. An enthusiastic crowd of 3,628, many wearing Notre Dame blue and gold Samardzija jerseys, watched on as the Smokies improved to 23-22 for the second half of the season.

Samardzija (1-0) looked to be everything you would expect from a Cubs top prospect, mowing down two Biscuit batters and keeping the rest guessing. He worked through six innings, keeping his pitch count low and benefiting from some great defense behind him. He allowed just one run while on the mound in the second inning, and worked his way through several jams. He struck out the last batter he faced in the sixth, pumping his fist as he strode off the mound into the dugout.

The Smokies offense got going early on to aid Samardzija in his quest for his first win at Smokies Park. Jemel Spearman led off the game with a triple off the right-center field wall. After an Issmael Salas walk, Casey McGehee hit a high chopper to third base for an out, but it was enough to bring Spearman home. Chris Robinson later singled in another run to score Salas, and Tennessee had an early 2-0 lead.

Tennessee plated an additional two runs in the bottom of the third, and another run in the fourth to further aid Samardzija. Kyle Reynolds, who went 2 for 5 on the night, ripped an RBI single in the third. Robinson followed up with a fielder’s choice groundout to score McGehee for his second RBI of the night.

Despite an Erold Andrus home run in the seventh inning, the Biscuits could never mount an offensive attack against the Smokies pitching tonight. Mark Holliman came on in his first relief appearance of the season to pitch 1 2/3 innings, and Rocky Roquet put out the final batter for his fifth save of the season.

The night belonged to Samardzija however, who was very sharp in his Double-A debut. His final line was six innings pitched, yielding six hits, one earned run, two walks, and fanning two Biscuits batters. Jon Barratt (3-9) took the loss for Montgomery after four innings of work.

DaytonaCubs.com"]Lis Lifts Miracle to 8-5 Win

Fort Myers Blows it Open With Late Flurry

By: Dan Watson

[DAYTONA BEACH, FL] Erik Lis had a night to remember Monday at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. The Fort Myers first baseman went 5-for-5 with two home runs, five RBIs and a pair of runs scored as the Miracle topped the Daytona Cubs, 8-5. Lis led a Fort Myers attack which racked up 13 hits and had at least one hit in each inning.

It was a tight game until the top of the ninth, when the Miracle plated four runs to extend what was a one-run lead. It was the third home loss in as many nights for Daytona.

The loss spoiled another solid night at the plate for Ryan Harvey, who went 2-for-3 with a double and a home run. Matt Matulia went 3-for-5 with a triple, two doubles and a pair of runs batted in.

For the second straight night, the Miracle jumped on the Cubs early. Adalberto Mendez walked Brian Dinkelman to start the game, and two batters later Erik Lis ripped a 1-2 pitch out of the park to put the Miracle ahead, 2-0.

It didn't take long for the Cubs to respond. Ryan Harvey belted a double off the wall in right field to start the bottom of the second. Matt Matulia followed with an RBI triple to right-center to cut the deficit in half. Billy Mottram's groundout plated Matulia to tie the game at 2-2.

Fort Myers retook the lead in the sixth. Danny Valencia doubled to the gap in left-center. Mendez uncorked a wild pitch to move Valencia to third, and it proved costly as Eddie Ovalle drove the runner in with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-2.

Harvey tied the score by himself in the bottom of the frame. He belted a solo home run to center to deadlock the game at 3-3.

Lis made sure the tie was short-lived. After a two-out single by Steve Tolleson in the seventh, Lis belted a two-run homer to right to put the Miracle up, 5-3.

The Cubs answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the seventh. Jonathan Mota ripped a double into left to plate Alfred Joseph and cut the margin to 5-4.

Lis struck again in the top of the ninth to put an insurance run on the board. With runners at the corners, Lis singled up the middle to score Toby Gardenhire and extend the lead to 6-4. A wild pitch later in the frame allowed Tolleson to score. Juan Portes singled to knock Lis home and make it 8-4.

It was the third straight loss for Daytona, which dropped to 18-26 in the second half. Scott Taylor fell to 4-11 as he was the losing pitcher.

Zach Ward picked up his first win since May, as he improved to 3-15 on the year. Two of his wins have come against the Cubs. Eddie Morlan notched his 14th save of the season. He gave up a run and allowed the tying run to come to the plate in the ninth. The Miracle advanced to 22-23.

PeoriaChiefs.com"]Chiefs Lit Up 14-1

Lansing, MI – For the second straight day, the Lansing Lugnuts batters got the best of Peoria Chiefs pitching in a 14-1 blowout Monday night. The loss sends the Chiefs to 24-19 on the half as they finish an eight game roadtrip 2-6.

The game went into the third scoreless when Lansing took charge against Chiefs starter Jeremy Papelbon. With two outs, Scott Campbell homered over the right field wall for a 1-0 Lugnuts lead. After back to back singles, Jonathan Jaspe made it 3-0 with a double to left field. Paul Franko extended the lead to 5-0 with a long homer down the left field line, his second of the season.

Raul Barron led off the Lugnuts fourth inning with their third homer of the game, a solo shot for a 6-0 advantage. Chris Siegfried relieved Papelbon in the fifth and struck out Travis Snider to start the inning. Jaspe drew a walk and the next two singled to load the bases with one down. Siegfried then walked Barron to force in a run, hit Kevin Nelson to force in a second run and threw a wild pitch as Jaspe scored for a 9-0 Lansing lead. A sacrifice fly from Campbell made it 10-0 before Chris Emanuele singled home a pair.

Peoria finally got on the board against Ray Gonzalez in the sixth. With one out, Brian LeClerc tripled to right center and came home on a groundout from Nate Samson.

Lansing scored their final two runs in the seventh after a leadoff walk, two base error and RBI single. Papelbon went four innings allowing six runs on nine hits. Siegfried gave up six runs on three this and three walks in one inning. Jayson Ruhlman gave up one earned run on three hits and four strikeouts over two innings. Position player Blake Lalli tossed a 1-2-3 eighth.

Gorman’s Pub Player of the Game: Blake Lalli (DH/P) – Lalli picked up the Chiefs first hit in the fifth and then singled again in the seventh. He also pitched the eighth inning for the Chiefs turning in a 1-2-3 frame.

Playoff Watch: The top two teams in the division excluding Beloit and Clinton will make the playoffs. With 27 games remaining, the Chiefs are in the Wild Card spot, 1 ½ game behind Quad Cities and 2 ½ games up on Kane County . The Chiefs have six games (four at home) left against Kane County and two at Quad Cities. The Wild Card team will play Beloit in the first round while the Second Half Champion will play Clinton.

BoiseHawks.com"]Eugene Hangs on to Beat Hawks

The Eugene Emeralds held on to beat the Boise Hawks Monday night, 9-8. Matt Huff struck out Mario Mercedes with the tying run on third base in the last of the ninth inning to secure the victory for Eugene.

Eugene scored five times in the third inning after getting one in the second to get off to an early lead against starter Al Alburqurque to get off to a 6-0 lead, then added two in the fifth and one in the seventh inning. Andy Parrino had a home run for the M's and Yefri Carvajal had three hits.

Kyler Burke drove in a pair of runs for th Hawks. Tony Thomas had a hit, a pair of walks and two stolen bases for Boise and Jonathan Wyatt extended his hitting streak to 12 games with an RBI single.

This lineup tonight for Montgomery will probably feature 4 major leaguers of some quality. Perez is a true CF and top 10 prospect, Jaso is probably one of the top catching prospects in all of 2a/3a and top 3 hitters in the Devil Rays minors, Hughes the 1st baseman just came from Vero Beach where he probably was top 3 hitters in the Florida State league and of course Brignac, so all in all a pretty good 2a hitting lineup.

From rabidawg's link:

“The bottom was falling out of his fastball,” Tennessee manager Pat Listach said. “He threw some really good sinkers. When he needed a strikeout, he was able to reach back and blow it by guys. It was a good debut for Double-A. We got a glimpse of what the future holds for the Chicago Cubs.”

...

Velocity and command were impressive. The right-hander’s fastball was consistently in the mid-90s and 47 of his 78 pitches were strikes. He walked two and struck out two.

Development prevented Samardzija going deeper into the game.

“He probably could have gone another inning or two,” Listach said.

...

“He doesn’t lack in confidence and he doesn’t lack stuff either,” Listach said. “He was able to go back and get some guys (out) who have hurt us all weekend.”

From Shark's blog. I always find these amusing:

8/7/07

New location, new start to a season. Feels great to get that W last night. Had some great defense behind me, along with some big hits. Not sure if any of you were at the game but it was cool to see the place packed on a Monday night. Especially with all the ND fans out in full force! Couldn't of asked for a better night...

Really went after some hitters tonight and mixed in my changeup. Honestly felt like I was in control of the game at all times. Couple strikeouts, six hits, a big double play, and I'm out of there in 6 doing my best to help this team win. I'm very excited to be up here in Tenn and I feel like this is only the beginning.

Stay tuned...

Do you think most star student athletes attend classes?

Sounds to me like he wasn't all that impressed with Daytona's defense. Glad to see him have some success right of the bat, and it will be interesting to follow the development of his off speed pitches. Very promising, if the reports are true that he is throwing a mid 90's fastball with great downward movement.
