Dempster, Howry......don't know why Hendry didn't get someone at the deadline. These two are unreliable late in games. Marmol should be the closer. Lou Piniella screwed up this game once again. I hope someone beats up Dempster after the game.

What part of 17 baserunners allowed in the 6IP since returning from injury indicates this would be a knee-jerk reaction? He's been terrible since coming back. The way Dempster's pitched since coming off the DL, he's lucky he's made it this long without this type of a blowup.

I remember when people jumped on me for saying I wasn't excited/didn't care much about the prospect of Dempster coming off the DL a few weeks ago.

Funny how that works. I do care now.

IMO, the Cubs won't go far with Dempster as their closer. He is a high stress pitcher - the more men that get on base, the worse he is. Lord knows how the 9th would have gone today if the home plate ump had eyes but Carlos Marmol needs to become the closer ASAP.

I don't think it really matters who closes. But Marmol is the guy who's pitching the best, along with probably Howry. They should be facing the middle of the other team's order; let the other guys take on the 6-9 hitters when possible.

Pretty much. Also, have Marmol, Howry, or hopefully Wood, come in anytime there are runners on.

What has Howry done wrong?

If definitely matters who closes. A closer needs to be able to throw strikes (Marmol). Dempster walks a ton of guys and it just builds up the pressure.

He doesn't show enough emotion on the mound.

i think synergy slept through the past two months

Since June 1st Howry has 28 IP, 3.21 ERA, 4 BB, 29 K and a .595 OPS against.

Seems like kind of an odd choice of players to DFA.

Dempster's just been awful since he came off the DL. It's only a matter of time before Marmol becomes the closer. Right?

As certain as Soto will be called up to catch and Murton will become the starting right fielder. In other words, no.

You should have your best relievers pitching in big situations, whether it be earlier in the game or later, rather than using them in the 9th inning with a lead. The closer label/position is the most overrated thing ever.

If you have a shutdown pitcher like Marmol, would you rather him come in, let's say, in the 7th inning of a tied game with 2 on and nobody out, or in the 9th inning with nobody on and nobody out and a lead (which is typically the situation that your "closer" comes in for)?

I see your point but Dempster just doesn't seem to fit into the closer role at all. I don't trust him at all to nail down the win. As they say, the last 3 outs are the toughest ones to get. With Wood on the comeback trail maybe he could take Marmol's current spot while Marmol becomes the closer?

As I said earlier when this post was made in the game thread, this is the kind of thing people come to NSBB to avoid. It's annoying.

Dempster is far more effective vs. righties than he is against lefties. It's been that way his entire career.

He should be used against tough righties, regardless of the inning. He shouldn't be trotted out to face a bunch of lefties.

I'm not Dempster's biggest fan, but he wasn't terrible before going on the DL. It's been 6 IP since he came off the DL and "I hope someone beats him up after the game" - that's knee jerk.

Tell that to Latroy Hawkins

and extent Boston and Oakland have tried the closer by committee method and both times it has failed. Eventually it will succeed. I have no doubt but in today's game relievers prefer being in set roles. Be that being Long relief, middle relief, set up, or closer

I agree with this philosophy. Dempster might not be the answer for closer, but making Marmol close would be a poor move.
