As much as I respect Bruce, I have to believe he needs to call BS on this one. Hendry is trying to sell us a load of crap, but I'm not buying it. There's no way the Cubs will take on a big multi-year deal like ARod, Griffey, etc. with the sale pending. If they could have done that, Zambrano would already be extended.

If Jones did steriods, he'd be Torii Hunter, although Hunter can actually play defense.

 

It would cost us a lot and we'd get a power bat that doesn't get on base that well. He would carry some draft picks with him, but god its not worth it.

 

That said, it would be a perfect Cubs move. I've said since the beginning of the season that Hendry will get either Hunter or A. Jones during the offseason. He won't be able to control himself.

I watch alot of Twins games, and Tori Hunter's defense is terrific . Granted he may not have the speed of Pie, but Hunter would be a vast improvement over Jones or Pagan in CF.

terrific is very much an exaggeration, average is probably a better word. he gets far too much credit for making the "spectacular" play and not enough criticism for failure to make more routine plays. he's right on par with Jacque defensively, and the only advantage I see is that he doesn't seem to spike the ball into the ground when returning it to the infield.

I'm interested in your basis for claiming that Hunter doesn't get enough critism for "failure to make routine plays". Are you a major league scout that follows most of the Twins games? Or do you follow them pretty closely?

 

Terrific is not an exaggeration at all. He makes plays that most CF don't/can't make. The fact that he plays in the Metrodome makes it all the more impressive. Many players have failed to make routine plays in the Metrodome, it is just a by product of the poor excuse for a baseball park.

 

The only comparable OF the Cubs have to Hunter defensively is Pie and we haven't seen him play enough CF to determine how good his defensive skills are.

I don't watch a lot of Twins baseball, but I did see him completely OLE! a ball the other night that led to some runs scoring. I think it was the same night he got ejected after coming back out after his AB to argue with the ump.

That's a pretty poor comparison. One of those guys is really, really fast, catches anything remotely near him, and has a photon rocket for an arm. The other guy makes catches at the wall. To say that Hunter is good because he makes plays in the Metrodome is a moot point. He plays there 81 times a year. If he hasn't figured out how balls travel on that field then there would be something really wrong with him.

I'm more interested in how you came to the conclusion that Hunter was a defensive wizard. Web gems? Stuart Scott? I do happen to watch quite a few Twins games because I have a lot of friends and relatives who either live in the cities or are big fans. I've been to Twins games and will likely be at another 1 or 2 within a month. I've logged probably 150-175 Twins games in the past 3 seasons alone, not that it really matters.

 

The only comparable OF the Cubs have to Hunter is Jacque Jones. Torii is nowhere near Pie.

There were some changes to the compensation with the last CBA, but compensation picks are still part of the deal. (San Diego might very well get a 1st rounder for Barrett, for example.)
