IowaCubs.com"]Soto So Good in Cubs 4-3 Win in 11 Innings

Cubs Win Third Game in a Row

By Jeff Lantz / http://www.iowacubs.com

Geovany Soto's two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning tied the game and his RBI single in the bottom of the 11th inning won the game as the Iowa Cubs topped the Omaha Royals 4-3 Wednesday night at Principal Park.

Soto's late-game heroics made a winner out of reliever Cory Bailey, who improved to 1-1 on the year.

The Cubs did not have a runner get past second base until the ninth inning rally. The win was the Cubs' fourth of the year when trailing after seven innings. They are now 4-23 when trailing after seven innings.

Billy Butler and Richard Lewis hit solo home runs for the Royals in the losing effort.

Micah Hoffpauir had a pair of hits to extend his hitting streak to nine games. Ronny Cedeno, Soto and Tony Richie each had a pair of hits for the Cubs.

SmokiesBaseball.com"]Smokies prevail over rain & Diamond Jaxx 7-3

Sevierville, TN – In a game that started two hours and fifteen minutes late due to a rain delay, the Tennessee Smokies got a combination of great pitching and timely hitting to down the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx 7-3 tonight at Smokies Park. A good portion of the 3,021 fans stuck around through the wee hours of the night to watch the Smokies keep pace in the North Division with the win. With four games remaining in the first half of the season, Tennessee is just one game behind the division leading Huntsville Stars.

After the extended rain delay, the Smokies got things started off right in their half of the first inning. Jemel Spearman led the game off with a chop single over the third baseman’s head, then moved to 2nd after Sam Fuld was called out at first base on a very close play. Fuld was ejected on the play for arguing with the umpire on the call. Spearman eventually scored on a Jake Fox groundout, and Tennessee had an early 1-0 lead.

The Diamond Jaxx battled back in the 2nd inning to tie the score at one. In the bottom of the 4th inning, the Smokies took the game back by plating two runs. Fox singled in the inning to get things started. Matt Craig then hit a laser shot to right center that got past Diamond Jaxx right fielder Prentice Redman for a triple to score Fox. Casey McGehee then hit into a fielder’s choice to score Craig to put the Smokies up 3-1.

The Smokies broke the game wide open in the bottom of the 5th inning to put the game away for good. Chris Robinson walked to open the inning, and then moved to third on an Issmael Salas double. After a sacrifice fly by Spearman scored Robinson, Jorge Cortes singled home Salas. After a double by Fox moved Cortes to third, Josh Kroeger singled them both home to give the Smokies a 7-1 lead.

Justin Berg (3-4) pitched his strongest game of the season to date in picking up the win. Berg pitched eight complete innings, yielding nine hits, two runs and no walks on the night. Justin Thomas (2-3) suffered the loss for the Diamond Jaxx.

good post. I'm okay with him in Iowa for this year if DeRosa is at second, but if DeRosa has to play third for an extended period of time (i.e., ARam's injury is worse than expected), then I think Patterson could outproduce Theriot without much trouble.

I think the real question is whether he's ready defensively

So it turns out Geovany Soto has been primarily playing 1B and DH because he hurt his shoulder and can't catch. I had been afraid the Cubs were trying to get a good defensive catcher to be more versatile, thank goodness that isn't the case.

Knoxville News-Sentinel"]Berg allowed two runs on nine hits over eight innings. The right-hander walked none and struck out one.

The Diamond Jaxx (29-37) kept beating Berg's sinker into the ground for the most part. He recorded 12 ground-ball outs.

"It's the first time he's been in the eighth inning," Tennessee manager Pat Listach said. "His pitches had good sink. He got a lot of ground-ball outs and we made some plays behind him."

I suspect his defensive problems are overblown. Errors, and fielding percentage as a result, are virtually worthless statistics, and I'm not aware of any advanced fielding stats compiled for minor leagues.

However, even if we assume that he does have defensive problems, wouldn't it be a good thing for him to have the opportunity to work with guys like Trammell?

I agree. He had one really terrible game last year and I think again this year. Let the kid play 2nd. It's the Cubs only real option.
