The game was so lopsided that Mike Mahoney pitched the ninth inning for the Cubs. One of the six batters he faced was Gautreau, who went into his last at-bat one hit shy of matching the PCL record of seven hits in a game.

Ironically, Mahoney, activated because the Cubs were one player below the roster limit, coaxed Gautreau to hit into a double play.

"Sorry," Mahoney said cynically when told one of his fastballs kept Gautreau from sharing the record last achieved by Neifi Perez, for Colorado Springs, in 1996.

Seven hits in a game? That's a huge week for him, most of the time.

What is the reason for Reinhard's demotion and insertion into the Daytona rotation? Was their an injury or are they just trying to get him starting again?

The latter. He has replaced Samardsija in Daytona's rotation.

Good, I didn't like that they moved him into a bullpen role.

Les Walrond wins his seventh decision

By Jeff Lantz / http://www.iowacubs.com

The Iowa Cubs scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning and cruised to a 10-5 win over the Omaha Royals Tuesday night at Principal Park.

Scott Moore launched a three-run home run to highlight the five-run first and give the Cubs a 5-0 lead. After the Royals bounced back with three runs in the second, Eric Patterson got the momentum back on the Cubs' side by leading off the bottom of the second with a solo home run, his ninth of the year.

The Cubs scored twice more in the third and posted single tallies in the fifth and seventh innings to make a winner out of starter Les Walrond, who improved to 7-2 with the win.

Daytona Swept in Three-Game Series

By: Dan Watson

[PORT ST. LUCIE, FL] - Daytona led again early, but again the St. Lucie Mets came back to top the Cubs, 7-3, Tuesday at Tradition Field. With the win, St. Lucie picked up a series sweep and ran their winning streak to six games. Josh Petersen led the Mets with two homers.

For the second straight night, the Cubs grabbed an early lead over St. Lucie. Brian Dopirak started the top of the second with a double off the wall in left-center. Alan Rick's single put runners at first and third, and Alberto Garcia's double-play ball plated Dopirak to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead.

Daytona tacked on another run in the third. Nate Spears led off the frame by roping a double down the right-field line. He moved to third when a pickoff throw from Mets' starter Deolis Guerra went into center field. Jake Muyco drove Spears in on an RBI groundout, and the Cubs doubled their lead to 2-0.

The Mets chipped into the lead in the bottom of the third. After Cubs' starter Greg Reinhard retired six straight hitters, Josh Petersen hooked a solo home run inside the left-field foul pole to cut the Daytona advantage to 2-1.

St. Lucie tied the game in the fourth. Dustin Martin ripped a single up the middle and moved to second on a wild pitch. A deep flyout to center field moved Martin to third. Two batters later, Drew Butera reached on an infield single that glanced off Reinhard's glove, scoring Martin to tie things up at two runs apiece.

The Mets kept it rolling in the bottom of the sixth against Cubs' reliever Jon Mueller. Dan Murphy started the inning with a single into center field. Two batters later, Murphy was nailed trying to steal second base by Daytona catcher Jake Muyco. Later in the at-bat, Emmanuel Garcia drew a two-out walk. That extended the inning for Petersen, who slammed his second home run of the night, a two-run shot to left field to give St. Lucie a 4-2 advantage.

Alberto Garcia welcomed himself back into the lineup in the top of the seventh. Just back from a stint at Triple-A Iowa, Garcia belted a solo homer to center field, over the 410-foot sign to slice the Mets' lead to 4-3. The Cubs threatened again later in the frame, loading the bases with two out. St. Lucie reliever Ricardo Morales ended the inning with no further damage to keep the Mets ahead.

The Mets blew the game open in the eighth. Drew Butera and Emmanuel Garcia led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Two batters later, Jamar Hill walked to load the bases. Sean Henry followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Butera and extend the lead to 5-3. A wild pitch moved runners to second and third, and Jose Castro singled into center field to cap the three-run inning and give St. Lucie a 7-3 advantage.

With the loss, Daytona drops to 30-34. Mueller was hit with the loss to fall to 5-2. The Cubs are now 1-13 at Tradition Field over the past two seasons. St. Lucie has now won six in a row to improve to match Daytona at 30-34. Morales picked up the win to move to 1-0.

The Cubs, mathematically eliminated from the race for the FSL Eastern Division first-half championship, will visit division-leading Brevard County on Wednesday and Thursday.

PeoriaChiefs.com[/url]"]Malone Hit Streak Ends in 3-2 Loss

Burlington, IA – The Peoria Chiefs left eight runners on base and fell 3-2 to the Burlington Bees in their final road game of the first half Tuesday night. Starter Jose Pina is now 1-7 and Ryne Malone’s 12 game hit streak came to and end for the Chiefs who fall to 30-34 on the half.

For the second night in a row, Matt Camp led off the Chiefs first with a double to left. Bees’ starter Everett Teaford rallied to retire the next three Peoria hitters and leave Camp at third base.

After going in order in the first, Burlington jumped on Chiefs starter Jose Pina for the lead in the bottom of the second. Brady Everett led off with a single to left and Michael Thompson followed with a double. After a groundout, Jase Turner put the Bees up 1-0 with a sacrifice fly to center.

Burlington added to their lead with a two-out rally in the third. Pina walked Kurt Mertins on four straight pitches with two outs. After Mertins stole second, Everett drove him home with a single for a 2-0 Bees lead. Thompson followed with a RBI double for the second night in a row as Burlington lead 3-0 at the end of three.

Peoria finally showed signs of life in the seventh. Yusuf Carter led off with a single against Teaford and stole second. Alfred Joseph picked up the Chiefs first hit with runners in scoring position in eight at-bats on the night as Carter scored on the single to cut the lead to 3-1. After a single by Matt Canepa and a failed sac bunt attempt by Jonathon Mota, Camp singled home Joseph to get the Chiefs within one. Reliever Henry Barrera retired Ryne Malone and struck out Josh Lansford as the Chiefs left the tying and go-ahead runs on base.

Russ Canzler led off the eighth with a walk against Jim Wladyka. Wladyka, who entered the game with a 27.00 ERA also walked Ryan Norwood with nobody out. But Carter bounced into a 6-4-3 double play and Joseph grounded to third as the Chiefs again left the tying run in scoring position.

Pina allowed two base runners in the fifth before giving way to reliever Jayson Ruhlman. The Chiefs starter allowed three runs on five hits and a season high five walks. Ruhlman threw 3 1/3 innings and allowed just one hit and two hit batters.

Gorman’s Pub Player of the Game: Matt Camp (CF) – Camp was 2-for-4 with a double, walk, single, RBI and two stolen bases in the loss. He leads the team and is 3rd in the MWL with 20 steals.
