We at West Tenn will try our best to beat Huntsville so the Smokies can have a one game lead. Until the Jaxx beat them soundly in Jackson next week.. lol

you get no help from the Diamond Jaxx.. Huntsville with a big win 11-3. Huntsville and Tennessee deadlocked in the North with the Jaxx five back as we head to the final twenty-five games in the first half of the season.

It might be time to place the "I'll shave my head if you guys win the first half" bet.. what do you folks think?? lol

Just looked up Jake Fox's numbers. I see he has only 3bb in 160 at-bats. He's definitely a Cub. Call that man up!

Anybody know if EPatt has been playing LF much? I see he's out there tonight.

apparently the cubs are set for the future at second base with mark derosa and perhaps ryan theriot

by the way, he hit a three run homer tonight

in a more serious attempt to answer the question, I'm going to guess that it's because Cedeno has joined the team, and he's the best-fielding SS, so Fontenot has been shifted to 2B and Patterson to LF. I'd prefer to see Fontenot into the OF so Patterson can continue to work on his defense, but whatever. They're the ones that haven't won a World Series for 100 years, so I'll trust they know what they're doing.

Thanks, it didn't make much sense to me when I saw it. Has Fontenot pretty much been determined to not be a viable SS option at the ML level? Would he and Theriot up the middle in either order be that bad if they both hit well?

I'm with you Truffle, the lack of direction and potential knee jerk reactions it looks like may be in the works really bother me.

Daytona lost 7-4. Bad outing for Estrada tonight: 4.2 IP, 8 hits, 7 runs, 1 K/2 BB's, 1 HR given up. Colvin was 1/4 with 2 RBI's. Nate Spears was also 1/4 with a double and 2 RBI's.

Peoria up 7-4 in the bottom of the 7th. Pina's line: 5 IP, 7 hits, 3 runs, 1 K/1 BB, 3 HR's given up (ouch). Yusuf hit his 5th HR of the season, a 2-run shot. Mota has two doubles and an RBI. Wellington Castillo, Alfred Joseph, and James Adduci are each 2/3.

Iowa up 6-3 in the bottom of the 5th. As mentioned, EPatt hit a 3-run shot in the 4th. He also has a single raising his BA to .331. Felix is 1/2 with a BB. Fontenot is 0/1 with an RBI and a BB. Cedeno is 1/3 with an RBI. Jason Jennings was rehabbing for Round Rock and struggled: 3.1 IP, 3 hits, 4 ER's, 2 K's/5 BB's.

This is a very stupid organization. You take out the future 2B of the Cubs and put him in LF? Truffle's reasoning makes a lot of sense; the logic behind it (from the Cubs point, not Truffle's) certainly does not. It's no secret that Patterson's fielding needs improvement. Moving him to LF truly does make no sense.

I don't think it's horrible if EPatt occasionally gets starts in the outfield, just so he's comfortable there and has that ability on his resume. But he should definitely be starting at 2B for the most part.

Peoria won 7-5.

Iowa up 7-6 in the 8th. Walrond: 5 IP, 8 hits, 6 runs (5 earned), 4 K's/2 BB's. Cherry has pitched two shutout innings of relief allowing only 1 hit, 2 BB's, and has struck out 4. EPatt now 3/5 on the night.

Wasn't there another bet you lost to a team before the head shaving?

Well, it was bound to happen with EPatt struggling at 2B defensively. I doubt it has anything to do with getting Fontenot in the lineup seeing as Moore could go to the OF and Fontenot could start at 3B if needed. Anyways, Fontenot finished the game at SS and EPatt at 2B.

Is EPatt a prospect anywhere but 2b? Certainly he doesn't hit enough for the corner OF.

No, he's not really a prospect unless he can stick at CF (with Pie around, how likely is that?).

IowaCubs.com"]Hoffpauir, Cubs catch Express

Micah Hoffpauir lifted a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the eighth inning as visiting Iowa edged Round Rock, 7-6, on Tuesday.

With the score tied, 6-6, Travis Driskill hit Mike Kinkade with a pitch to lead off the eighth. Kinkade advanced on Eric Patterson's bunt single, went to third on Felix Pie's sacrifice and scored on Hoffpauir's fly ball to center field.

Patterson ripped a three-run homer, his sixth, in the fourth. The 24-year-old second baseman collected three hits to push his batting average to .333. Mike Fontenot, Ronny Cedeno and pitcher Les Walrond each added an RBI for the Cubs (25-20).

Iowa reliever Rocky Cherry (1-0) tossed two scoreless innings, giving up a hit while striking out four and walking two for the win. Clay Rapada retired two batters for his second save. Starter Walrond gave up six runs -- five earned -- on eight hits while fanning four and walking two in five innings.

Driskill (1-2) took the loss after giving up a run on one hit while striking out two and walking one in two frames.

Express starter Jason Jennings struggled with his control in his final rehab assignment, allowing four runs on three hits while fanning two and walking five in 3 1/3 innings. On the disabled list with elbow tendinitis since April 9, the 28-year-old right-hander tossed five scoreless innings for Double-A Corpus Christi last Thursday. He's slated to rejoin the Astros and could start for them as soon as early next week.

Eric Bruntlett drove in two runs and Cody Ransom went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Round Rock (22-24). Brooks Conrad and Josh Anderson chipped in an RBI each. --Ryan McConnell/MLB.com

Cubs Drop Three Straight in Sarasota

By: Matt Martinez

The Reds (31-14) bats were too much again for Daytona (21-23) starting pitching as Cubs' starter Jesse Estrada only lasted four and two thirds in the 7-4 loss.

Daytona has dropped their last three, but more importantly, eight of their last nine. Tuesday's contest with Sarasota resulted in a loss, but the Cubs bullpen looked impressive in the lop-sided defeat.

Estrada allowed seven earned runs on eight base hits and two walks in his four and two thirds. After that, the bullpen produced zero after zero after zero. Tim Layden came in relief of Estrada and worked two and a third scoreless innings, allowing only two hits and no walks. Matt Avery showed up in the eighth and threw a scoreless inning where all of his outs came by way of the strikeout. Unfortunately for the Cubs, they were staring at a 7-2 deficit before the effective bullpen managed the bump.

Daytona scored two runs in the fifth, one on a fielder's choice by Nate Spears to score Alan Rick, and one on an RBI single off the bat of Tyler Colvin to score Mark Reed.

The Cubs continued to chip away at the deficit in the seventh as Rick and Reed scored yet again off the same bats of Spears and Colvin, this time off a sacrifice fly and RBI groundout, respectively.

Rick was impressive on Tuesday as his plate discipline was in full capacity. Rick walked three times in four plate appearances and singled his only other time at the plate. Rick scored two of the Cubs' four runs in the loss and never recorded an out.

PeoriaChiefs.com"]Chiefs End Losing Streak 7-5

Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs evened up a four game series with the visiting Lansing Lugnuts with a 7-5 victory Tuesday night at O’Brien Field. The Chiefs are now 21-22 on the season and snapped a six game losing streak.

The Lugnuts got off to a quick start for the second straight game after Yuber Rodriguez hit a solo home run to left field off Chiefs starter Jose Pina.

Jim Adduci singled to start the bottom of the second and on the first pitch ,Yusuf Carter connected on his team leading fifth home run of the season to put the Chiefs in front 2-1. The blast gave the Chiefs a lead for the first time in the series.

The Chiefs extended the lead in the third inning after Matt Camp reached on an infield single that hit off the pitchers’ glove. Jonathon Mota hit an opposite field double down the right field line to score Camp all the way from first base to push the lead to 3-1. With Mota at second, Alfred Joseph picked up his 14th RBI of the season with a single to left. The rally continued with two outs after Adduci picked up his second hit of the game and D.J. Lewis drove him in on an RBI single to right. The Chiefs were not done getting key hits with two outs and runners in scoring position. Wellington Castillo drove in a pair of runs with a high hop infield single to the shortstop Raul Barron to give the Chiefs five runs in the inning and a 7-1 advantage.

Joey Metropoulos hit the second solo home run of the game off Pina to start the fourth inning to left center field to cut the Chiefs lead to five at 7-2. Sean Shoffitt added the third solo shot of the game off Pina in the fifth to make it 7-3. Pina has allowed eight home runs which is tops on the Chiefs and also ties him for the top spot in the Midwest League.

Lansing scored a run in the top of the sixth inning of Chiefs reliever Al Alburquerque to cut the Chiefs lead to 7-4. The Lugnuts would add yet another lone run in the top of the eighth inning after Chris Emanuele doubled to left and came around to score after Matt Camp chased down a Raul Barron shot to the gap in center field and doubled off Jonathan Jaspe at first base but a run scored from third to make it 7-5.

Chiefs starter Pina worked five innings allowing seven hits and three runs to pick up his first win of the season. With closer Rocky Roquet unavailable after working 2 1/3 innings last night Jayson Ruhlman worked the eighth and ninth innings allowing just one run on two hits to earn his first career save.

Gorman’s Pub Player of the game: Jim Adduci (DH)- Jim had three hits for the second consecutive game going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Adduci is now 6-for-9 in the first two games of the series with two runs scored.

Notes… Peoria has fallen behind in 11 straight games…Carter now has 8 career homers at O’Brien Field, tied for fourth on the career list which is led by John Santor who hit 12 in 2003-04…The Chiefs scored more than three runs in a game for the first time since 5/13 at Wisconsin…The five run third was the most runs scored in an inning since a four run fifth also on 5/13…

He was struggling some, but I certainly haven't seen anything that would suggest that he's been so bad for so long that it's reached the point that the Cubs have to give up on him at second base. He was bad in the AFL, but outside of that I don't think he was worse than average. And, as has already been mentioned, his bat really doesn't look as nice at a corner outfield spot.
