Iowa wins season best 5th straight game

By Jeff Lantz / http://www.iowacubs.com

The Iowa Cubs scored five runs in the first two innings and held on for a 7-5 win over the Fresno Grizzlies Tuesday night at Principal Park.

The win was the fifth straight for the Cubs as Iowa starter J.R. Mathes held the Grizzlies to two runs over five and two-thirds innings for the win. Mathes improved his record to 3-2 on the year.

Iowa centerfielder Chris Walker extended his hitting streak to seven games with a second inning single and Eric Patterson, Scott Moore and Mike Fontenot each added a pair of hits for the Cubs.

Shortstop Ronny Cedeno, in his first game back from Chicago, left the game in the first inning after spraining his ankle stepping on first base.

SmokiesBaseball.com"]Smokies Pounded 12-1 Tuesday by Montgomery

Montgomery, AL-Tennessee scored a run in the top of the first when Josh Kroeger doubled in Sam Fuld. The 1-0 lead was the only time that the Smokies would be ahead in the contest.

Gaby Martinez smacked a two-run homerun in the bottom of the first and Montgomery rolled the rest of the way.

Jason Pridie helped chip in a run scoring double in the second inning give the Biscuits a 4-1 lead.

The game got away from Tennessee in the fifth inning when Montgomery scored five times with two retired.

Montgomery added three in the eighth and won going away 12-1.

Derek Feldkemp (1-4) grabbed his first win in the Southern League pitching 5 innings of at times shaky seven hit the one run baseball while walking three.

Kevin Hart also had a difficult time with his control walking four batters who all scored in taking the loss. Hart gave up five hits and eight earned runs in 4 1/3 innings on the mound.

Game Will Not Be Made Up

By: Dan Watson

[TAMPA, FL] Tuesday's game between the Tampa Yankees and the Daytona Cubs has been called due to heavy smoke in the Tampa area. Because the teams will not play each other again in the first half, the game will not be made up.

The teams were set to finish a four-game series Tuesday at Legends Field, but winds pushed smoke from wildfires across the area toward the Gulf Coast.

PeoriaChiefs.com"]Chief End Dayton's 10 Game Win Streak

Dayton, OH – Fresh off a big offensive output Monday night, the Peoria Chiefs marched into Ohio and ended the Dayton Dragons 10-game win streak with an impressive 5-1 win on Tuesday. Three Chiefs hurlers held the top hitting and top run scoring offense to just one unearned run as Peoria improves to 16-13 on the season.

The Chiefs offense picked up right where it left off Monday night in Fort Wayne . Starter Jamie Arneson retired Matt Camp and walked Dylan Johnston before picking Johnston off first base. Alfred Joseph doubled to right-center and Russ Canzler walked. Josh Lansford singled to left and the throw home beat Joseph but the Chiefs rightfielder slid under the tag for a 1-0 Peoria lead. Yusuf Carter followed with a RBI single of his own for 2-0 Chiefs lead. Jim Adduci walked to load the bases, but Arneson got DJ Lewis to ground out and end the inning.

Dayton picked up an unearned run in the third to cut the Chiefs lead in half. Gerardo Cabrera led off with a sharp single to right. Alfred Joseph fell down and the ball rolled all the way to the wall allowing Cabrera to reach third. Eddy Rodriguez got the home team on the board with a sacrifice fly to right before Jake Renshaw got out of the inning.

The Chiefs extended their lead in the fifth inning against reliever Lee Tabor. Matt Camp reached on an error to start the inning and scored on a double to right by Joseph. Canzler picked up his fourth RBI in the last two days with a two strike single to left scoring Joseph for a 4-1 Peoria lead.

Renshaw pitched out of trouble in the fifth inning. With one out Cabrera singled to left and Rodriguez doubled to third. Chris Heisey hit a grounder to third and Rodriguez broke for third too early and was caught between the bases for the second out. Renshaw then struck out last year’s #1 pick Drew Stubbs for the third time in the game to leave two runners on base.

The Chiefs added to their lead in the eighth against reliever Misael DeJesus. With one out, Carter walked and stole second. Adduci bounced out, but Lewis singled in front of a charging right fielder to plate Carter for a 5-1 Peoria lead.

Renshaw tied a career high for the second straight start with six inning of work. He allowed one unearned run on four hits, didn’t issue a walk, and struck out a career high eight. Lefty Jason Ruhlman allowed two hits and struck out two in his two scoreless innings. He benefited from an outfield assist as DJ Lewis threw out Chris Valaika at the plate to end the eighth. Rocky Roquet allowed a hit and a walk while striking out two in the ninth in a non-save situation.

Gorman’s Pub Player of the Game: Jake Renshaw (RHP) – The Chiefs right-hander went right after the top hitting team in the MWL and set a new career high with eight K’s. Renshaw lowered is ERA to 1.23 and is now in the top 10 of the league for ERA.

Notes… Renshaw has not allowed an earned run in his last 15 1/3 innings dating back to the second inning on April 28th against West Michigan…Lansford has a RBI in four straight games, the Chiefs record is 10 set by Daric Barton in 2004…The Chiefs are 18-11 all-time in Dayton including a 16-5 mark in games played in Ohio before the All-Star Break…The sellout crowd of 8.405 was the largest crowd the Chiefs have played in front of this season and the 512th consecutive sellout at Fifth Third Field…

Ohh......that's why he wouldn't take a walk.

First of all, the injury to Ronnie Cedeno’s ankle mentioned in the organizational recap today was somehow sustained when he arrived at first base after drawing a walk in the first inning last night. Maybe there needs to be one of those, “please step up” signs posted on the bases.

I was thinking that Cedeno probably forgot and instinctively stepped down to try to walk back into the dugout and got surprised by the base.

Des Moines Register"]"Great win, but kind of a strange game, from that respect," said Mike Fontenot, forced into action earlier than anticipated.

In the first, the Cubs lost Ronny Cedeno for the game after he walked, then stepped on the bag in a way that resulted in a minor right ankle sprain, according to trainer Bob Grimes.

"Rolled it," Grimes said of the injury.

Fresno lost right fielder Nate Schierholtz, who crashed into the padded fence along the first-base line behind the bullpen, also in the first.

He chased Micah Hoffpauir's foul fly as far as the fence would allow, and ran so hard into the wall that his glove popped off his hand, landing three rows into the box seats. The result? Bruised knees, a bruised elbow and sore ribs.

Cedeno's injury happened in his first game since being sent to Iowa from Chicago Monday, but Fontenot came to the rescue.
