So we're asking the guy who's just chillin?

Maybe that's why he asked him. Like when I was a kid and not paying attention in school and the teacher would ask me something and I would at least pay attention for the next hour.

When Lou Piniella asked outfielder Cliff Floyd in the 14th inning of Tuesday's 4-3 loss to the San Diego Padres where he would put Jason Marquis if the game went into the 15th, it wasn't the first time the Cubs' manager has asked for a player's advice during a game.

"Just to have some fun," Piniella said. "What're you going to do? We played 14 innings, and the guys played hard, made some nice plays. It's cold, and all of a sudden I told Floyd, 'Now put your thinking cap on. We have to find a place for Marquis in the lineup. Where do you want to put him?' He looked at me like [he was puzzled].

"Yeah, I like to have fun with the players. I really do. Why not? We were going to put [Marquis] at first base. I was just wondering if [Floyd] had managerial ambitions down the road."

And what was Floyd's response?

"He didn't have one," Piniella said, laughing. "I still don't think he does."

Floyd was surprised to be called upon for in-game advice but will be ready from now on.

"That's Lou," Floyd said. "You never know what to expect, and that's what I love about him. He keeps everybody loose."

Floyd reiterated he has no managerial aspirations but said he wouldn't mind being a bench coach after his playing days are over.

"I'd help a manager out, be there for him to lean on," he said. "But not managing. There's a lot of involvement I'd rather not be a part of. I've been on some big-market teams and there's a lot of stuff involved. And I wouldn't ever want to be a bench coach for a team that wasn't doing well. Then you're dealing with a lot of guys who are really stressed out, and [the coach] doesn't have any fun."

Floyd said he learned a lot as a young player in Florida from coaches such as Jerry Manuel and Fredi Gonzalez.

And now he said he he's trying to pass on that knowledge to Felix Pie and Matt Murton.

"The best was Manuel," he said. "I was always asking, 'Why am I not playing?' He would say, 'We have Moises [Alou] and [Gary] Sheffield and [Devon White]. This is what I need you to understand.'

"So I'd definitely welcome being a bench guy, teaching kids, instead of having all eyes on you. I really enjoy teaching."

I don't get it. So he's comparing himself and jones to sheffield or (a younger) alou? Newsflash Cliff, your like 40 and fall apart after 40 games every year. why not try to stretch those 40 games out? This quote just doesn't sit well with me. I really thought that Cliff would be a great pickup as a bench player with a start about every 3 days or so. I don't know, I give up.

Please read the article again - Cliff is not complaining about not starting.

It seemed like you kind of flamed out there at the end. While I may or may not disagree with you're assertion, I'd say you're probably reading into it a bit much.

What? I never said cliff was complaining about not starting. From what I have read, he has no problem platooning. What I do have a problem with was the information he's supposedly passing on to murton and pie. That information being that the reason they are not playing is that there are other veterans ahead of them. Thats all. I like cliff and i like what he brings to this team. I just think the team will benefit more with Pie and Murton playing more days than not. Both offensively and defensively.

maybe so, it just didn't sit well with me...the last few games have just left me a little irritated i guess.

I don't care who made the decision. Fact is, it's April 18th and we're already using pitchers as pinch hitters.

Make no mistake, this team is in total disarray.

In a 14 inning game...

and it was a pinch runner.

Anyway, these things happen in 14 inning games. Just be thankful that Theriot (best comparison to Doug Dascenzo?) didn't end up pitching

No, it was last night:

d-Marquis, PH 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 .250

Well Lou had already used Theriot, Cedeno, Ward, and Murton as pinch hitters (or in Cedeno's case, a pinch runner). Who would you rather see pinch hitting, Marquis or Blanco? Or if Cedeno wasn't used yet, Marquis or Cedeno?
