They're having a fireworks show after the game tonight in Houston and they'd rather do a post-game show that is in studio instead. Who cares about the Astros? Show us the fireworks.

The Mets killed the Braves tonight. They are looking pretty impressive so far this year.

Paul Byrd has a no-hitter through 4 in that Indians game, too... I think they'll get the game in.

The Washington Post"]

One strike away from being an official game, Cleveland's home opener against Seattle was postponed last night when day-long snow wouldn't stop.

The Indians were leading 4-0 with two outs in the top of the fifth when the umpires halted play for the third time. The first pitch had been delayed for nearly an hour because of the wintry weather.

Crew chief Rick Reed called the game at 8:41 p.m. -- 4 hours 36 minutes after the scheduled first pitch.

The game was rescheduled for 1:05 p.m. today, and the clubs will also play their regularly scheduled game at 7:05 p.m. -- weather permitting.

Cleveland's Paul Byrd was one out away from getting through the fifth inning and possibly being credited with an abbreviated no-hitter when the snow hit Jacobs Field again.

Protecting a 4-0 lead with the bases full and two outs, Byrd was ahead 1-2 on Jose Lopez when Seattle Manager Mike Hargrove came out to complain about the conditions.

How mad would you be if the game was called one strike short of being official AT HOME? It seems the game should have been called earlier ... but when you've played through the elements to within one strike / out of an official game, it's ridiculous not to finish the at-bat.

Especially if there's a no-hitter going on.

Replayed as part of a day-night doubleheader.

Ohio Tribune-Chronicle"]

None of the statistics, including Byrd’s 4 1/3 hitless innings, count. The Indians and Mariners are scheduled to play a day-night doubleheader today. The first game is set for 1:05. The regularly scheduled game remains at 7:05.

Two hours later after he had thrown his last official pitch, Byrd was still steamed.

‘‘It was pretty hard to look over and see their guys laughing in the dugout like they got away with something, and they did,’’ he said. ‘‘I didn’t like the way it was handled. I didn’t like how it ended.’’

Byrd said he felt the Mariners waited to see if he regained his command of the strike zone in the fifth inning before voicing concerns about the conditions.

‘‘The snow had been coming down for a while, and I couldn’t throw a strike,’’ Byrd said. ‘‘It wasn’t a problem when I was throwing neck balls and walking people. If it’s so dangerous, say something in the previous at-bat or even before that and stop the game then. Don’t wait until I get the count to 1-2, and then say, ’He looks like he’s throwing strikes again, so we’d better do something.’ ’’

Wedge said Byrd would have continued pitching had the game survived the final delay.

‘‘We were keeping him ready,’’ he said. ‘‘We were keeping him loose and keeping the blood flowing. Obviously, the weather didn’t cooperate.’’
