given the lack of OFers at tenn, i assumed fox was going to play some lf...but i hope he can somehow stick at catcher.

Here's a quote from a local paper that did an article on Cubs prospects from Indiana.

Tom Van Buskirk / Post-Tribune"] Fox is an outstanding power hitter, but there have been some concerns about his defensive capabilities as a catcher. As a result, Smokies manager Pat Listach told Fox he would bat third, play catcher three days a week and play another position -- first base, third base, left field or right field -- the other days.

"I'm not going to have many days off, which I like, and I'm supposed to bring all my gloves to every game," Fox said.

Sevierville, TN - The Tennessee Smokies hosted the defending JUCO national champion Walters State Tuesday night at Smokies Park. The Smokies won the seven-inning exhibition game 3-1.

The Smokies got on the board quickly in the first inning. Centerfielder Chris Walker led off the game by reaching safely on a throwing error by third baseman Stephen Shults. On the next pitch, Walker had no problem stealing second, putting himself in scoring position. Jake Fox, who was the designated hitter for the night, brought Walker home on a line single to left.

Fox was the offensive star of the night, going 2-for-4 with 2 RBI, which included a 400 foot double that hit the centerfield wall. The last Smokies’ run was scored in the fifth inning on a single by Francisco Salas.

Down to their final out, the Senators avoided the shutout on an opposite field home run by Shults. Shults managed to hit one out of the ballpark despite using a wooden bat and the efforts of right fielder Josh Kroeger, who almost kept it in.

Fox can hit. Are they going to find a position for him?

He could be a valuable trading chip, especially for an American league team.

DaytonaCubs.com"][DAYTONA BEACH, FL] Brushing up on their skills to prepare for the season, the Daytona Cubs took on Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Eagles in an exhibition. Leading off the bottom of the first inning against Embry-Riddle, Chris Amador drove a double off the wall in left-center field. Nate Spears followed with a single. After a fly out to right field, a walk advanced Amador to third. Jesus Valdez hit a fielder’s choice which scored Amador, putting the first run into the books for the 2007 season.

With two outs in the fourth, Mark Reed smacked a bullet through the glove of Eagles centerfielder Steven Howard, narrowly sliding safe into second for a double. Matt Matulia also followed with a double scoring Reed from second, putting the Cubs up 2-0.

The Eagles came back in the top of the fifth with back-to-back singles by Chris Trappy and Danny Martin to start the rally with one out on the board. A sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Branden Roper-Hubbert advanced the runners who then scored on the double by Howard. The game finished in a two-all tie after seven complete innings. The game marks the second straight season in which the Cubs have been part of a two-two exhibition game tie.
