So sayeth Paul Sullivan...

Lou appears to be sold:

"I've been very comfortable with seeing the progress Cedeno has made in camp," manager Lou Piniella said. "We've asked him to do a few things both defensively and offensively, and he has responded.

"I told [general manager Jim Hendry] this morning, I don't think we need to go out and do anything, unless he really thinks we're going to improve our team. I'm comfortable with all the pieces we have here. We can make it work with what we have here."

I'm still holding out hope that Ronnie eventually pushes Cesar out of job by the end of the year. Not because Cesar is sucking, but because Ronnie is playing that well.

It's a dream, but a nice one. ;)

During his stint when Cesar has his DL time, of course!

Na, in my dream that position is filled with The Riot posting a .375 OBP and hitting in the #2 spot. :D

I must admit you are a bigger dreamer than me!

Odd because I already traded Theriot and Cedeno for ARod and Miguel Cabrera.

all of which makes me ask: why is Soriano playing CF?

Cedeno has ridiculous range and a great arm, but can he make the routine plays? He has the natural ability to win Gold Gloves at SS. He also has the ability to make 20+ errors at SS.

If he gets it together on defense, he'll put it together on offense. W/O idiots like Dusty and Clines pushes the swing early/often approach, Cedeno will improve his plate patience, which was on the upswing until last year.

In an ideal world, I'd have liked to see Cedeno get to regain some confidence in Iowa. However, this is still better than wasting a roster spot on Tomas Perez, and given the relatively few options for another MI, it seems like this was the best we could realistically hope for.

so who is the odd man out now along with perez? are they going with an 6 man pen so cherry goes to iowa and pagan makes the team?

No-7 man pen, Pagan is gone. The pen will be Howry, Erye, Dempster, Ohman, Cotts, Wuertz, and either Guzman or Cherry.

Eventually, someone is going to have to be bumped for Woody. If Wood is able to get in enough innings to start the season on the active roster, Guzman and Cherry are out of luck (although, Cotts should be demoted but it isn't likely to happen).

True-Guzman and Cherry probably both go back to Triple A if Wood is available at the start of the season. There will be a lot of factors that will determine what happens if he comes back a couple weeks in (how people are pitching, has Guzman had to be in the rotation, etc.)

from what lou has said i don't think it would be too hard to imagine both guzman and cherry making the team over cotts, who has options left iirc.

Cotts does have options left-the only reason that most people are putting Cotts in the bullpen for sure is that is what the papers were doing days after Lou made his negative comments about Cotts. Several of the newspapers still had Cotts as a guaranteed spot, so the assumption is that he has one for now even with Lou's recent comments, although most of us would like to find that particular fact to be wrong.

I'm interested in seeing whether Cesar's ABs increase as they draw toward Opening Day. So far he has fewer than DeRosa, who had the flu for a week. Cesar is still edging out Cliff Floyd, though. spring training at-bats
