For years ESPN has tried to convince umpires to wear microphones during games. Major League Baseball President Bob DuPuy helped broker the deal this season, although even umpires willing to wear them can turn them off during arguments.

ESPN, of course, hopes that won't happen.

The network will evaluate the audio during games and package it with replays.

"We don't want to offend or embarrass anybody, including ourselves," said Tim Scanlan, ESPN's senior coordinating producer. "If it's meaningful and takes the viewer closer to the game, we'll do it."

It would be cool to hear Lou and an ump go at each other but the microphone would probably be turned off or the content edited. :?

This seems like it could possibly make watching a game mor annoying. ESPN already has too many bells and whistles in its presentation, they don't need more. The only thing I need to hear from the ump in balls and strikes, and that comes across clearly enough.

True enough but I don't see them scaling back. So, if they are going to provide an inside peek (or listen) of the action I'd like it to be juicy and not normal balls and strikes fluff.

I wouldn't mind it as long as its not 5 times a game. Once or twice a game during a dry stretch in the game could make it easier to get through. I have a bad history of falling asleep in my lazy boy during the 4-6 innings.

With ESPN? Trust me, it will be every freakin play. You'll get to hear the HP umpire yapping quick nibblets of guck to the hitter and catcher after every pitch.

I highly doubt that. They're not going to let that get on the air without them being able to edit it first.

Well games are probably on a 5 second delay anyway. . Plus they'll know they have a microphone on. I can imagine it now. While I'm trying to enjoy a game. .

STRIKE!!. . "that one really moved, di'n it?"

. . . . . . . . .

BALL! "so do you wear that jewelry every game?"

. . . . . . . . . . . . . .

"here you go here's a clean one"

. . . . . . . . . . . . .

. . . . . . . . . . . . .

"step back into that batters box pretty-boy. ."

. . . . . . . . . .. . .

I don't mean just bleeping. I mean all-out editing and only playing things they deem worthy of playing. There are commentators (as much as the ESPN ones suck), after all. They can't just have the ump stuff on all game.

They'll only play it with a highlight or two during/after the game, just like when they mic players.

TI'm not sure I'm going to like this, but then again, there's not much about ESPN telecasts that I do like, so probably not a big deal.

I heart Joe Morgan.
