Probably, but it is highly overrated. Highly.

 

Defense in baseball is the least important of the three (offense, defense, and pitching) becasue the difference between an elite defender and an average or poor defender is extremely small. While the differene between an elite pitcher or batter and the average or poor one is huge.

I find it ironic that all the talk about defense being overrated came during a game in which the Cubs allowed 7 unearned runs.

This is EXACTLY what I was thinking when I read the game summary in the Sun-Times (from Chris DeLuca's column):

 

Had this been Dusty Baker's fifth season managing the Cubs -- instead of his first year of a forced vacation -- a stinky Cactus League debut that featured three errors and seven unearned runs would have seemed like a continuation of 2006.

 

You can almost hear the long sighs and ''I don't know, man'' refrain from Baker.

 

Can any of us really imagine Sweet Lou even using the word "Dude"?

Could Pat and Ron have been any worse calling this game?

 

They didn't even know the players on our team (e.g. who was playing 3B after Aramis), much less the opposing team's lineup.

 

It's not a big deal when I can watch the tv and see for myself, but when it's radio only, I'd like a little more PBP instead of Santo telling us how much he didn't like paying $28 for a meal that included beans. BEANS! Oh Pat, you know I hate beans...
