In the article, Rothschild says Prior took his extra off-day from live hitters yesterday instead of today. We'll just have to wait to hear that Prior faced hitters today, then on Tuesday to see if that's accurate.

Group live hitters: Thursday - off - Saturday - off - off - Tuesday

Before panic sets in, let me include the rest of the section in that piece:

...Rothschild said Prior was just taking an extra day between live-BP sessions that all the pitchers are getting -- most of them getting that extra day before they throw again Tuesday.

Rothschild said Prior will throw to hitters today.

''I made sure to tell the pitching coach and the trainer to tell these pitchers that have had some physical ailments in the past to work but take it easy,'' Piniella said, ''and not push themselves. There's plenty of time here. The secret is to get these guys all healthy when the season starts.''

I find it interesting that Lou always seems to call Rothschild "the pitching coach." I wonder what, if anything, is behind that.

It could stem from his own long history with Larry; whom Piniella brought to the MLs as a bullpen coach. Most likely it goes back to what Lou referenced in his first press conference; he's a delegator so he has confidence that the messages he gives to his coaching staff will be effectively delivered to the team.

Perhaps because he is the pitching coach?

Hes supposed to.This is from the Suntimes today..

PRIOR DEEDS: Right-hander Mark Prior, who's being treated with caution this spring in his comeback from shoulder problems, did not throw to hitters with his usual group, instead doing a lighter, flat-ground throw session, at the pitcher's request, Rothschild said.

It's worth keeping an eye on over the next few days, but Rothschild said Prior was just taking an extra day between live-BP sessions that all the pitchers are getting -- most of them getting that extra day before they throw again Tuesday.

"He's getting close," Rothschild said. "I wouldn't say full velocity from what you've seen a couple years ago, but it's a definite improvement. He's handled the work load with flying colors."

So no mid 90's fastballs?? he was around 89-92 last year..How much of a improvement?..I wish they would give a range of hard hard these guys are throwing..

Prior threw 35 pitches to hitters in a live batting practice session around 8:30 a.m. MT on Sunday at Fitch Park. So far, so good for the right-hander, who spent the winter strengthening his shoulder.

"He cut some balls loose, he felt good after the workout was over, no pain, no discomfort," Piniella said of Prior, limited to nine starts last season. "It's good news when we keep these guys going forward."

Cubs pitching coach Larry Rothschild said the early session went well.

"He progressed from the last throwing session, which is good," Rothschild said.

They are still building up his arm so I expect him to continue to get stronger each time out.

As long as he keeps moving forward every time he goes out there, I think that's all we can reasonably hope for.

This is much more progress than we've seen in 3 Spring Trainings. It's also good to see Larry being positive about his progress instead of the seemingly guarded way he approached Prior's previous STs.

The right-hander will have Monday off, then throw a light side, then another batting practice session. Prior's velocity is improving each time as well.

"He's getting close," Rothschild said. "I wouldn't say full velocity from what you've seen a couple years ago, but it's a definite improvement. He's handled the work load with flying colors."

Prior has said he expects to be ready by Opening Day of the regular season.

"I have no indication that he won't be [ready]," Rothschild said.

"We're going to make sure he really feels that he's ready," Piniella said of Prior. "There's no sense in rushing that situation. I would think that by the following Wednesday or Thursday, we'll get him in a ballgame."

Mark March 7-8 on your calendar.

If he pitches in two Spring Training games it will be a record or him. I think he will and that he will be ready Opening Day. I don't recall Prior ever expressing that confidence last Spring.
