NEW YORK - Chan Ho Park reached a preliminary agreement with the New York Mets on a $600,000, one-year contract, giving the team another option for its starting rotation heading into spring training.

His agreement was disclosed by two people familiar with the deal, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the contract had not yet been completed.

Park was to take a physical Friday in the Los Angeles area, the final step before the deal can be concluded. In addition to his base salary, he could earn $2.4 million in performance bonuses based on innings.

Should be an interesting rotation in the 4/5 spots for the Mets...

As bad as I know Chan-Ho Park is, I'd still prefer him at 1 year and 600K over Jason Marquis at 3 years and 21M.

If I had full faith the Cubs would do something smart with the other 20 mil, yeah, I would too. However, I'm fairly confident that Marquis will be better this year than Park, and I'm not convinced that extra money would have been better spent, so I'm not sure...

They might have gone harder after Lugo. They might have gone after JD Drew. They might have gotten into trade talks with the Braves for Jones or Seattle for Ichiro, and had money to extend either one. Heck, they might even have done NOTHING and been better off with extra leeway to make moves in the offseason.

Unfortunately, you're probably right. They likely wouldn't have done any of these and we'd have paid through the nose for Weaver or Meche instead.

I agree. However, they have a pretty good stable of guys in AAA. I don't have much faith in Marquis as a starter, but he could be a good long man. The price is wrong though and so are the years.

Let's hope Larry really did figure out Marquis. Just one more hope to place on top of all the others.
