So let me get this straight. Everybody from your posistion players, to your utility "Util", Staters "SP", Releif "RP", and plain "P" all contribute to your "score" by the end of the week.

And only players that are "benched", "BN" are the ones that do not contribute to your score for that week? I just want to make sure I am setting up my team correctly for each matchup.

yes, and (hopefully like hockey) you can bench guys when they're not playing and put someone else in at that position, so you can have (theoretically) a different lineup every day. For instance, if you know that one of your SP won't be starting that day, you can leave him on the bench for someone else. Not that my lineup is any great shakes at this point, but I've got them set through Friday so feel free to take a look. This won't be as important later in the year, when just about every team is playing just about every day, but I would guess that since April generally has more rain dates built into it, it could end up making a difference early.

You're KMacCurve, right? If so, you don't have to bench guys that aren't scheduled to play that day. If you want to replace a guy that isn't playing that day with someone that is playing, do that. But if you only have a few guys with games scheduled or scheduled to pitch on a certain day, it doesn't hurt you to have them sitting in your starting lineup. It's not a big deal, but if you bench a guy every time he isn't scheduled to play, it's a lot more work than you need to be doing and you might forget to change it (or have something come up and not be able to change it) and miss games by some guys.

I'd recommend putting guys from your bench in for your normal starters whenever you want, but I wouldn't clear out guys that aren't playing/pitching.

yep, that's me. Thanks much for the advice. I'll probably do that once I've gotten used to things a bit. Moving guys for the first couple of weeks will help me get to know my players a bit better, I think. Thanks for being willing to commish a bunch of us rookies, too! :D

This is *almost* right, I think. You can have different lineups every day. Each day's lineup contributes to your total score for the week, and whoever does best overall with total score in each category gets the "win" at the end of the week. Does that help?

Kinda. I just picked up Graffanino because Furcal was on the DL and dropped howry. I guess I will have to learn as we go as you do. I see we are matched up the first round.

In our matchup, we are tied 3-3. Now I am just guessing but Fantasy Baseball does not take into account BAD things like earned runs, ect. . but only GOOD things like strikeouts? Because you have carpenter and he had a bad outing yet you got 3 points because he struck out 3.

Hey everyone. Is there a yahoo link to read about how exactly everything adds up point wise? It would help immensily on who to drop and how to arrange my team.

the tie won't stay - looks like they only update with numbers once a day, after all games are complete, so the info we've been scored on is from Sunday. After having just about every team play today, we should see some movement tomorrow.

...oh, and link that includes the scoring info is here:

http://baseball.fantasysports.yahoo.com/b1/11100/settings

Ah, thanks a bunch. Looking forward to how we scored! Willis had a good day for me today.

Ok I saw some stats in our matchup, and also the link you gave me. So basically these are what we get points with?

R, HR, RBI, SB, AVG, W, SV, K, ERA, WHIP

I understand all of the basic stuff like 1 R = 1 pnt? 1 SB = 1 pnt? But how the heck is ERA and WHIP scored/deducted into the final score? It doesn't explain.

it's actually not 1R=1point. Take a look here:

http://baseball.fantasysports.yahoo.com/b1/11100/matchup?week=1&mid1=5&mid2=7

at the top, you'll see a box underneath our smack talk that shows the different scoring categories. For those things that are bolded for me, I'm currently in line to get the point for the week, those things bolded for you is where you're in line to get the point for the week. So there's only a chance to get 10 points total in a week, and it looks like they don't award points in case of a tie. The link that I added above can be shown by going to the right side of our league page, finding your name, then clicking the "Match Up" right next to it

You're basically right. Each category is treated as a separate game. So if you win 6 categories, your opponent wins three, and you tie in 1, you have a record of 6-3-1 in the standings.

I understand all of the basic stuff like 1 R = 1 pnt? 1 SB = 1 pnt? But how the heck is ERA and WHIP scored/deducted into the final score? It doesn't explain.

At the end of the week, Y! totals up all the R, HR, RBI, SB, W, SV, and Ks that the players each team had "starting" on each day during the week. Y! compares each of those categories and whichever team has more gets 1 "win" for each category. So if you have more R, HR, RBI and SB than your oppoenent, but fewer W, SV, and Ks, you will get 4 "wins" and your opponent will get 3 "wins." At the end of each week, Y! will also compare the total AVG, ERA, and WHIP of each team's starters (it's calculated the same as they do in real life when they refer to "team ERA" or "team batting average" etc) and compare those. Whichever team has a higher AVG gets a "win" and whichever team has a lower ERA and WHIP gets a "win" for each of those.

So there are 10 "games" going on between you and your opponent each week (1 for each of the ten categories above). At the end of each week, you'll see the standings on the front page will reflect how many "wins," "losses" and "ties" you have. Those numbers will be added up over the year and the 6 teams with the best winning percentage will make the playoffs (the top 2 teams get a "bye" during the first round of the playoffs).

So, right now, you're behind KMacCurve 6-1 b/c your teams are tied in R, SB, and SV and you are only doing better in 1 category (team ERA). Those standings are currently meaningless, b/c it only matters at the end of each week (each week ends on Sunday for fantasy purposes). So, if after Sunday's games, you are still only doing better in ERA, tied in R, SB, and SV, and losing the other 6 categories, on Monday, the front page will show that your record is 1-6-3 and KMacCurve will be 6-1-3. Y! updates around 5:00 am eastern each morning. Sometimes there is a glitch and the stats for the last day don't show up until later, but Y! does a good job of correcting those problems later.

OMG I'm getting my ass kicked! That's it I quit. j/k.

I understand much better now, thank you!! Can I get just a little advice here. Is there a couple of guys you think I should drop and what type of players should I try to pick up? I think I need some SP that can rack up some more K's.

So are you saying that the "BN" spot does not contribute even if they play a game that day? So for example I have a util 2B guy playing tonite but my regular 2B is not playing, should I but the util 2B guy in to get some extra points?

Yes-your guys are on the bench are partly there to handle the off days of your regular players. If your regular is not going to play, then put your bench guy in his place, and then put the regular back in for tomorrow's games. Points from guys who are on the bench the day they play do not count.

So it's a very hands on experience in that you have to make sure to move guys back in if they are playing that day and you want THEIR results eh? One last thing. When can you move guys around? It's past midnight now and I am unable to switch BN guys with position players, BN P's with SP's.

I don't think the matchup is updated until the next day (after midnight Pacific time). StatTracker, however, updates immediately. It's free until April 15, then $9.99 for the rest of the year after that.

So hopefully by 2:00 a.m. central time? I'll be up late so I'll check and post what I find. StatTracker I really don't need. I was just curious when the "official" matchup scores get updated. Thanks!

Y! doesn't usually update the stats in baseball until around 7 am Eastern. I don't know why, b/c the fantasy basketball stats are usually updated by 5 am Eastern. Maybe more people play baseball, so they have more work to do? I don't know.

In fact, I think if you add a player after midnight Eastern, but before midnight Pacific time, it will be reflected as if it was made the day before. For example, if Friday at 12:30 am Eastern, I drop a player and add a different one, that added player will show up on my team Friday, as if I had added him Thursday. I'm pretty sure Y! uses Pacific time to determine what time transaction take place.

You're right about that. Since Yahoo does use Pacific time, you added the player at 9:30 P.M. Thursday, so the player is available on your roster for Friday games. If you add the player after midnight Pacific time on Friday, he isn't available until Saturday (on the flip side, you'd still have the player you dropped available for Friday's games).

I noticed that.

I also noticed something funny. When I go to "my team" on it's main page it shows what my guys got for that day. Even just a couple hours after the game. However when I go to "matchup" it still shows what they did for 1 day ago. Sometimes it seems to even stretch almost past 24 hours ago. It takes a looooong time for "match up" to update.

But it's funny, if they already have the results "computed" in "my team". . Then why can't they just update it into "match up". Weird. .

Do IP count? As far as I can tell, when it computes ERA and WHIP it actually doesn't count IP. So you could have 5 REALLY good RP and record an incredible WHIP and ERA (possibly SV's) and forsake W's. Is this the case?

Please someone let me know.

yeah, you could. but you'd also be screwed on k's, and if just 1 of your relievers had a bad outing, your era and whip is pretty much screwed.

I see, thanks that helps. Yeah I've been picking up a few good SP and RP what have good career ERA's, WHIP's, and K's. And dropping a few that don't contribute much to those stats (Marquis). I'm already below average on K's. My only hope is that Matsuzaka continues to dominate, and a few of the guys I picked up contribute as well. I really didn't know all of this when I drafted. So I didn't pick up some of the stellar closers (SV's + K's) like some of you did. But I'm pretty happy with who I've been able to pick up.

The most fun thing right now is the match up I'm having. I'm leading in ERA but I have 3 more SP than can probaly contribute to me picking up the point in W's. But at the same time, if one of them has a bad outing I can loose my ERA point at the same time. :D

IP does not count
