Actually the reports on Wood, Miller and Prior are positive! Man, I hope and pray Prior is healthy!

Not to be a rotten egg, but it is, after all, cubs.com...

"In a perfect world, I'd like to tinker with the outfield," Hendry said. "We have a very solid group. We're counting on our young kid, Felix Pie, being a factor, whether it's Opening Day or down the road shortly after. When you get out your wish list, you can't make it all about buying new players. You want to have your own guys develop, too."

Translation: there will be no CF acquisition.

The new Cubs slogan:

Tinker to Jones to Pie.

Ohmans 2005 ERA vs leftys....0.93(29 innings)

the kid is the **** as a loogy...granted i overspoke when i said he was untouchable, but why trade him over trading eyre? Will is the pen lefty we need to keep unless he is in a package for something special

He's a very good loogy. What if a team wanted him instead of Eyre and would give the Cubs the player they really covet? As you pointed out you would and I'm sure many GM's might prefer Ohman but some might prefer that "veteran presence" that Eyre has.

notice the bolded part

And this is from a post I made on page 1:

He could always be part of a trade and not the main piece.

i may be wrong here...but youre saying eyre could be the main piece in a trade, but the clearly better(on all fronts, stuff/age/price) option in Ohman cant be? lets trade the fat old fu....err guy

Boy, it sounds like to me that the Cubs are planning on Pie contribuiting with the big club this year.

I guess that's the answer to Cuse's thread in baseball discussions.

Who knows who or what kind of package the Cubs would put together that might include Eyre or Ohman. My point is that I don't really care if either go in a trade as long as the trade makes the Cubs better and if they are the main piece of the trade or just a piece so be it. It depends on who the Cubs are trading with and what they want out of a Loogy. The Yanks might want an Eyre type guy and take the salary off the Cubs books while the Marlins would like an Ohman type of contract.

Wow, the Cubs pumped the payroll way up and backloaded all their big deals, yet are still forced to lean heavily on a very sketchy rookie due to a money crunch. Wait til the really big paychecks come due in 2009. Could get real ugly unless the farm surprises everybody and produces a major contribution to the big team in the next 2 years.

Pie better turn out. The Cubs desperately need some of this position talent from the minors to finally start making the grade. It needs to be more than just Murt.

Do you doubt for one second that Hendry wouldn't be seeking an established veteran everyday CF if there was money available to take on another big salary? The Cubs are 1000% in win-now mode and there's not a chance in hell Hendry is happy about relying on Pie after his dismal showing in winter ball. Hendry's spin that he's not seeking a veteran starting CF because he believes it's important to develop your own players is total BS. If the Trib gave him more money for it he'd be on the phone 10 seconds later making offers for a CF.

Who is there out there for them to sign along those lines? Once you got past Drew the list was incredibly short of people that could potentially outperform Jacque or Pie. There's zero reason to believe that there's suddenly a "money crunch" just because they didn't throw piles of cash at someone for CF.

The Cubs are in win-now mode, and Hendry probably has to win-now to keep his job (hopefully), but I wouldn't go so far as to say it's 1000% win-now. Remember, they haven't traded any prospects this offseason. An outright win-now mode is going to include selling off some of the future for today. The Cubs are in a hedged win-now situation, as well they should be. Hendry was given X dollars to fix the mess he created. He's got no business being unhappy about having to rely on Pie. And I doubt he is unhappy. He wanted to go with Pie 2 years ago. I think he may have planned all along to go with Pie, and he spent money elsewhere knowing he wasn't going to spend big on CF.

I don't understand the trade for Pierre then if he was thinking this 2 years ago.

Baker whined about a lack of a "true leadoff hitter", and Pie was injured that year. Hendry wanted to call him up in 2005 before he got hurt. He couldn't go with him in the offseason because he wasn't a "true leadoff hitter" and there was no way of knowing how he'd respond early in 2006. I think Hendry traded for Pierre expecting to get the 2003 version of Pierre, as he typically only talks about a player's best stats.

I can't tell if you're sarcastic or not. If so, the Tribune gave the team the money to spend. It's not like they had zero say as to how it was spent, or at least knowledge of how it was going to be spent and how the contracts would be set up. I really don't see how the Cubs are suddenly on a tight budget given how they've been spending and how much money they've saved on re-signing guys like Wood, Aramis, Miller and Ohman.

I don't see how anyone can know if the Cubs are at their limit. They don't report their true financial state, and their budget -- as we found out in dramatic fashion this year -- is highly arbitrary.

Exactly. The Cubs randomly decide to spend and they have as much money as they want/need. What are people seeing that indicates that they're running light in the pockets?

Their spending habits are not random.

Despite all the spending, this year's payroll is not all that high. Most of the deals are severaly backloaded, so that right now, the payroll looks to be somewhere around $105.
