However, this offseason is under the old rules. So, this year the Cubs likely will lose some picks that they will not lose in the future.

I read that the new rules start now.

might you be thinking about the new rule V rules?

Yeah, the changes in Rule 5 start this year, the changes in Rule 4 (the June amateur draft) compensation picks start next year.

anybody surprised by the rule v changes? it seemed like it was a good system before, i dont know why it needed fixing. this will give another year to evaluate which talent is 40-man worthy, may make being a gm a little easier.

from mlb.com:

"Type C Major League free agents will no longer carry draft pick compensation for the club that loses the player, beginning this year, while Type A and Type B free agents will continue to carry compensation. Next year the Type A and Type B pools shrink. Right now, Pool A is the top 30 percent at their position, but in succeeding with decrease to 20 percent. Pool B is the top 50 percent, but it will decrease from 21 percent to 40 percent. "

So, we should still receive compensation for Pierre. I won't mention Aramis, because I'm expecting Hendry to give him whatever he wants to stay.

Isn't he a type 4-3 Free Agent? What the heck would the Cubs get for that I wonder.

I like the new rules for Rule V. Guys like Hagerty, Dubois, Sisco, etc. get an extra year to show whether they are major league material and need protecting.

We already received compensation for the Type 4-3 FA. A swift kick in the crotch.
