I just caught the end of Mike and Mike and they said that things were pretty hot in regards to Piniella to the cubbies....

It's very much an improvement, in my opinion.

Very true, but unless they get players the improvement will be very minor...

True statement. Piniella needs to manage better players. Unfortunately if Dusty was given the good players he'd still be around.

Bruce's new column says the Cubs are hot after Lou Piniella.

I just lost my breakfast. Of all the stupid things to do Hendry finds the stupidest (I know).

I knew all along Hendry wanted Lou more than anyone else.

It certainly looks like you were right.

Could this be another piece of the Hendry M.O.? Hire a high-profile, well-known manager to take all the heat away from the poor personnel decisions.

I think it's more a case of risk avoidance. Since Jim is on the hot seat he doesn't want his bosses to see him take a chance on anyone who's not a big name and "proven". If the team disappoints again Jim can say he got the most provenest manager on the market, so the choice of manager was not to blame. Also I just think Jim is a sucker for big names and big reputations.

I think the last statement there sums everything up.

Too bad that doesn't ring true for players as well.

What about Juan Pierre? Didn't Hendry get him because of his reputation? How about Jacques Jones?

He's not the only one. I'm honestly a little surprised that the baseball media types seem almost unanimous in endorsing Piniella for the Cubs job. Of course, it was probably the same way when Dusty was hired, too.

If Lou is the choice then that to me is a good sign. It means that Hendry will not wilt to public perseption of whom they want on the job. Hendry has to make the hard decisions this being the very most critical.

Lou is not a brave choice, he's just the opposite. He is in fact the safest possible choice, which is why I predicted he'd be Hendry's favorite.

Lou is the safest non-Girardi choice.

Well if Hendry signes Lou he's digging his own grave. In a couple of years they will wind up firing Lou and Hendry. 2 years of horrible baseball and the team will probably be worse off than it is now when its over. Lou is a white Dusty Baker. My following the Cubs will be reduced to these boards and occasionaly reading box scores if they give the job to Lou. yuck yuck yuck, Hendry has clearly learned nothing from the last few years.

Lou can't do any worse than Dusty did, given the roster and the injuries that he had. And this is NO endorsement of Dusty Baker.

Teams suck because they acquire bad players, not bad managers.

Naw, Lou is safer. Girardi only managed one season and got fired. He's not officially proven yet. Lou's been around forever and had some good seasons.

Girardi would give Hendry a lot of good will. Not hiring Girardi would piss a lot of people off. Lou is probably one of only a few guys that would placate the masses that would be pissed about Girardi not being here. And his big nameness is also the only competition for Girardi's story, as it pertains to PR.

saying "Dusty Baker did the worst job anyone could do with what he had" isn't likely to be mistaken for an endorsement

I'm not going to be upset if it's Lou. I'll give him a chance. He better not turn from short-tempered Lou into nice, cuddly Lou just because he's coming to the Cubs though. I've seen that movie before, and I don't like it.

I'd rather have Girardi, because he did fairly well with an under-talented team which is what we have right now. Plus he might be able to survive the inevitable Hendry firing, which will be happening fairly soon.

I don't buy that the fact he was fired by the Marlins means anything. Maybe he just wouldn't put up with their nonsense. Owners and GM's aren't always right, as every Cub fan should know.
