The above is the current 40-man roster which has 41 names when including Kerry Wood. I've bolded those that I expect to be left unprotected, departing via FA, or traded/released over the course of the winter. If my picks are right (and I know they won't be), that's 11 spots that will open up and put us at 30 (I am also assuming Wood is brought back).

 

Who are some of those from within our organization that need to be protected this offseason?

I do not know what the rules are for sre, but based on when other guys had to be protected some important names are:

Fox(was available for rule 5 last year)

Gallagher(even if he doesn't need to be you may want to)

Eric Patterson

Ryan Harvey

Layden

Shaver

Atkins

Fuld

 

Those are the names that stick out to me. Not all may need to be and I probably left off a few, but that should be a good start.

 

Also a guy who I hope is added to the list Fontenot.

I'm not sure I totally agree with your list either as far as who willbe left unprotected. I would like it, but I don't expect all those guys to be left off, most notably Bynum and Rusch. And also Novoa. I think we may see some of the Marmol/Mateo/Guzman group dealt off in a Juan Pierre like deal this offseason.

Brian Dopirak - most interesting name on the list. I think Hendry will keep him with next year being a defining year. If he flames out next year or gets hurt again he could be de rostered.

Cedeno isn't getting waived, and I really doubt Dope is either.

No way Dopirak is dropped off the 40-man. If Cedeno and Novoa aren't traded, I expect they'll remain on the 40-man. According to craig, Novoa actually has one more option year because he spent all of this season in the big leagues.

Thanks, Raisin. I knew there was a thread, but I couldn't find it after a very brief search. I have a feeling Cedeno and Dopirak will be traded. Novoa was more wishful thinking.

I think they would fall under traded rather than released.

Well trading Dope right now might make less sense than waiving him would.

As SSR alluded to, trading Dope would come under the trading while value is extremely low category. He had a down year in 2005 and an injury-plagued 2006 which resulted in another down year.
